Yes you can add custom icons to cutom pois.Review the faq at the top of the page.A lot of info there.Also use the search feature to pull up topics on this subject.Then if you have any questions a lot of people on site will help you out.
On the C330, and many other GPSr's, it is only necessary to have an ICON.bmp, named exactly as the POI file, in the same folder and uploaded to your GPSr with Garmin's POI Loader application.
An example would be:

You must be thinking about JPEG files. Those you need to be able to see the drive. Icons are fine, I have several on mine.
