Newbie to Garmin Nuvi 200 questions

How many POI's are pre-loaded on my Nuvi 200? How do I load more without using a USB or paying a ton of money? I appreciate any answers.

Thanks

Approximately 6 million. You need a USB connection to load more, but the POI files here are free.

Without a USB what? You have a USB port on the 200 don't you?

If you want to load Custom POIs for some reason without a USB, you can put the SD card in a card reader and load them that way.

I'm not sure why would don't want to use USB, however.

I'm not sure that will work.

I'm not sure that will work. If you load the custom POIs on the SD, they would have to be in GPX format, not CSV, and the nuvi will load them into Favorites, not Extras Custom POI.

At least, that's how my 200 works.

The POI loader gives you the

The POI loader gives you the option of loading to the Nuvi 200 or the SD card. When the Nuvi 200 boots, it will give you the option of loading the SD POI's just loaded into the Nuvi memory. If you don't want them copied and don't want the question to pop up everytime you boot the Nuvi, answer "yes" to the copy, then "skip" each poi file. It will not ask you again.

See this thread about usb

See this thread about usb cable and other info. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8515 .Could not find a owners manual on Garmin site but my understanding is that it does not matter if you put gpx or csv files on the card it will read and accept both.Custom pois if put in correct folder format they will appear under extras. If this is incorrect please correct me.

Yeah, you don't put the CSV or GPX files on the SD card, you simply select the SD card as the destination when you run POI Loader.

If you put GPX files on the card, they will be read as Favorites.

If you put CSV files on the card, they won't be read by the GPS unit at all.

I think it will work. When

I think it will work. When you use the loader, just say that you want to install them on the SD card in the card reader and it should do it. Then when you stick the SD card in the garmin, it will ask if you want to move them over to the unit and you can say yes.

Thank you MM for solving a problem that has been vexing me. I always have loaded my Custom POI's onto the Garmin memory. I back-up some important files, including my Custom POI's, on an SD card that I sometimes leave in the GPS (my reader is not working). I have one gpx file, the Revolutionary War sites http://www.poi-factory.com/node/5732
in my Custom POI's. I've been wondering why they show up in Favorites.

The problem is, once they are in Favorites, you can't get them out just by removing the SD card. You have to delete them one by one.

I have now taken that gpx file out of my Custom POI's, but I would like to find a better solution. Can that gpx file be easily made into a csv file with just a click? Or are there any other solutions?

gpx to csv

If you want to change gpx file to csv fle there are several programs to do that.I use http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert . Some information on this thread also http://www.poi-factory.com/node/10909

Why?

First, why do you want to keep GPX or CSV files on an SD Card? They should be kept on your computer, unless you want add GPX locations to your favorite (and you obviously don't want that). That being said, if you are determined to keep it on the card, just remove the "x" from the "gpx extension and the GPS won't use it until you add the "x" back. If you convert to csv, there could be data in the file that will be lost.

They are kept on my computer and I back up the important or time-consuming computer files on an SD card. Removing a letter from the extension is not a bad idea--quick and easy.
