Chatty Charley thread for the week of March 24th 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Man - I sure feel sorry for you truckers!! Diesel fuel is more expensive than gas (and easier to make) and we know you don't get much mileage out of a gallon of that fuel oil. I wouldn't blame you guys at all if you stuck - and crippled this country. Maybe then some folks in Gov't would wake up to your plight!

Keep on truckin dude!!

Joel

Diesel fuel is a byproduct of making gasoline. Use to be diesel was way cheaper than gas. Now it's almost a $1.00 more per gallon.

Diesel is now averaging $3.999 a gal. Big trucks get about 6 miles per gallon. And burn about 1 gallon per hour when idling. And for those of you who are against trucks idling, would you sit in a steel box, with the sun beating on it, in the middle of the summer, with no a/c? Or how about in the winter? Sitting in the same steel box with no heat?
Some people think it's ok. We are only human, trying to do a job and survive in order to bring you your goods to the store.
We need more people to help, by contacting their government officials and voicing their opinions about this anti-idling matter.

Ok, I'm done. (Hopping off soapbox) NEXT!

So, how many gallons can a big truck take? I take it that most have duel tanks. Is there a huge different in gas milage from no load to a heavy load? Just curious.

The average big truck can hold 300 gallons of fuel (2 150 gal tanks). As far as fuel mileage goes, have you ever towed anything heavy such as a large camper? Same with trucks as with cars and suvs', more weight, less fuel mileage. When I referred to 6 miles per gallon, that was an average being loaded with 40,000 lbs (20 tons). Fully loaded, a truck can weigh up to 80,000 lbs (40 tons). Side note: See why we can't stop fast?!!!My truck holds 100 gals of fuel. I drive an expedite truck. Fuel stops come every 500 to 600 miles. So it cost me about $250 to $300 per fill up.Thank you for asking!  smile

Now hear this........

Heard a rather interesting thing today. Gas companies are now saying that if they are "forced" to lower diesel fuel cost - they will offset it by raising gasoline cost. I was stationed in Germany from 1976 to 1980. At that time, gas there was $4.00 a gallon. Gas in France (at the time) was $6.00 a gallon. We used ration coupons which we purchased at $1.25 per gallon. They were good in (at the time) West Germany, but could not be used in France. If you went to France, you better have a fuel efficient vehicle! I think the point I'm trying to make is that the Europeans have dealt with "this problem" for a very long time. Our biggest problem is our thirst for BIG cars that are not fuel efficient. Until we all wake up and start driving more fuel efficient (read smaller) vehicles, we are doomed to pay whatever the gas companies wish to charge. Only consumption will lower the cost - nothing else. (Just MHO)... Personally, I drive a Honda Civic Hybrid - and wish everybody did.......(42 mpg in town - 45 to 48 mpg on the road)

Painball

I am looking for a SUV Hybrid for my family. Now I understand why that little girl is all ways so sad after riding in that little car so often. my 6 and 9 year old want some room and safety mrgreen Painball prices over there are not do to the coast of gas. It is do to a very high gas tax and nothing else. Were over here it is do to a lack of refineries and a dependence on overseas crude oil and a lack of drilling here in the USA. not over seas taxes. rolleyes
