my nuvi 660 and the oxon hill area..

i noticed there seem to be a decent number of people here from the dc area.
anyway i was wondering if anyone here has experienced what i had-- i was coming from oxon hill/ft washington to get home (germantown, md) and for some reason my nuvi takes a loooong time to find a satellite reception. its not until i get onto the highway that i can get one.

also.. going TO oxon hill/ft wash.. it always takes me through DC.. (I get to see the monument/lincoln memorial) while the scene is nice.. my friends told me getting to ft wash/o hill is faster through 495 (and less traffic lights) i also did notice that it does take me through 495 going back. but going to oxon hill/ft wash.. it takes me through dc.

If you are going through DC,

If you are going through DC, then it is probably cause you have your settings set to go the shortest route, my father did that! Change it to "fastest" route.

i always have it at fastest

i always have it at fastest route. i wish there was an 'avoid DC' feature. i think there is, (avoid city?) im not thinking well right now.
isnt there a way to avoid a certain highway? i know there is an 'avoidance' that is 'avoid highways'.. but i dont want it to avoid ALL highways.

maybe i havent mentioned, but when i go home, it doesnt go the same route... its actually a faster route.. and yes, no DC.. good!

Avoid DC !!!

I also wish that my Nuvi had an "avoid DC" setting. I try to avoid 495 whenever possible. When going to DC from Baltimore, I susally go 70 to 97 or 70 to 29. 495 is tough at ANY hour ...

I usually have my Garmin map DC from Cookville.

Just my $.02

i cant stand 495! going down

i cant stand 495! going down 270.. 495 is the worst to get stuck on

Routing Routine Ain't Perfect

I've had similar experiences. Coming from the Eastern Shore and going to Arlington, my Garmin has routed me through DC (New York Ave) going there and via Penn Ave and 2956 going back. When it determines the "fastest" route it doesn't go through all possible routes, just a few and picks the best. Depending on which end it starts from, it can select different routes. I've just headed in the direction I want to go and the Garmin "recalculates" and will usually select the route I prefer.

Sometimes going through DC

Sometimes going through DC can be faster. If you get on 295, it bypasses the city, but also bisects 495, and the traffic moves fairly quickly, upwards of 20 mph faster than the limit. There are speed cams, luckily, they are also on the POI database downloadable from this site.

The DC area is a miserable place to drive, though sometimes I do find a nice twisty road. Using avoidances, you can force the NUVI to find the shortest route, whilst avoiding major roads and highways. When I am not in a hurry, I do this, and have found some very nice, scenic and twisty routes. (I drive a MINI, so twisty is good)
