I was in the Wall Street Journal today because of a post I made on this forum

I made a here post in this thread:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/5107

and the Wall Street Journal Saw it. So they interviewed me and today the story came out. It was on the front page. The story was about the GPSr steering people wrong. The happened to me on vacation when while I was out Geo-caching. I was going from one cache to another and the GPS routed me over an abandoned road.

Kind of Cool. I was really impressed with how well written and informative the article is.

Hey that is great-- front

Hey that is great-- front page of the WSJ and nice write up-- The GPSr are great but they still require some common knowledge to use them.

NUVI 680, NUVI 5000, MS S&T,

Yep that happened to me ...

Yep that happened to me not too long after I purchased mine before I developed a sense with mine. It that happened today, I would question it and probably turned back before I got that deep and trapped so that I could not turn back! Now if if doesn't look right I question it and sometimes I get it wrong because I question it too much.

Happend to me also...Saw the article...Nice

Nice article. Good thoughts about not blindly accepting GPS solutions.

How cool

is that!! Very nice.

been there at one time or another but once we get used to the GPS, regardless of brand, and understand its limitations, I think we all benefit from it. Nice article by the way. Congrats to the interviewees.

Well it is cool. Never thought that would happen. The process was very neat too. The WSJ is very professional and courteous.

I am not aware of other news picking it up!

Did it actually show any

Did it actually show any photos of the people that they interview?

Interesting - when I clicked on the link, my ZoneAlarm security software blocked access to it, calling it a known site for spyware.

Happened to me not too long

Happened to me not too long ago also. My unit wanted me to turn down a dirt road that it thought went all the way to a nearby highway but it was actually a driveway to a trailer park (trashy at that) that went almost to the other highway but not quite.

I continued straight and forced a recalcualtion.

Now if only garmin will develop a system for users to upload map corrections and alerts for things like road construction like TOMTOM now has.

That's a good article. I

That's a good article. I guess we all have to use our common sense if the directions just don't look right. But I would still depend on the GPSr to guide me through unknown territories and do still keep a few maps in my trunk just in case I need to see the whole area.

Article

An interesting article. You're a celebrity smile

Wall Street Journal

I have to admit that I too, was contacted by the writer of this article a while back.

She had said that because of something I had said on this forum, that she wanted to know if I was interested in talking about my experience with wrong directions given by my GPS.

I did not respond because I thought it was someone looking to slam the GPS devices and not blame the people who blindly follow the directions given.

I did not want to give anyone a reason to put the GPS in a bad light, since it is like anything else, a "tool" to use. If you take a hammer and hit yourself in the head with it.... it's YOUR fault.

Common sense should prevail with anything.

Actually, it was a well written article.

We, too, were contacted by her because of a posting we made at:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/1175
(Actually, this was a tongue-in-check posting)

I also felt the way you did. I told her I wasn't interested in doing an interview because I sensed a GPS-negative article coming; and I would rather she not use that posting in her article. I told her the GPS also has a good side ... helped us so many times in unfamiliar cities; and I felt the article should also show its good side. "Don't want nobody bad-mouthing my 'baby'".

Sometimes gps devices can

Sometimes gps devices can develop old timers disease like me. We get confused and kind of lose our way. Good article.

Maps can be faulty

I recently upgraded to the newest version of City Navigator from my old City Select v7. Finally, the maps no longer think there's an onramp at 5th avenue in my town. There has never been a ramp there. Next I have to drive up the hill to the nearby town of Paradise and see if the new maps no longer try to send me down roads that don't exist and have never existed.

I love the technology and it has proven invaluable on cross-country trips and on trips for work. You just have to understand that it isn't perfect.

I asked her some questions and my sense was that she was just trying to get the facts instead of blaming anything or anyone and she would be rather balanced and I think she was. My GPSr is a great tool that I depend upon a lot. I realize its limits and that I have to make the ultimate decision. I think it an important point that newbie understand that these are not all knowing boxes but tools that have have limits. I'm glad I responded and found out what she wanted.

Star Status

So, I wonder if Ms. POI will give you special stars for being in the WSJ? mrgreen

Yep, me too.

We are the Worcester couple looking for cannolis!

I told her to mention this POI site, but I didn't see it on there. I may have missed it.

I sent pictures as well.

That pen and ink drawing...

That pen and ink drawing is a long-standing WSJ tradition. It is a style called stipple, or dot drawing, and a portrait completed in it can be quite a rare (and laborious) work of art. It is the same "syle" used for the presidental portraits and ingravings on all US currency.

Here's a link to one of the WSJ's artist, Noli Novak. It is very likely she completed your portrait.

http://www.nolinovak.com/

The WSJ will allow you to purchase your portrait from the artist if you wish, and in certain circles a portrait by one of the WSJ's artists is quite a status symbol.

I would definatley purchase my own - given the opportunity.

They are very rare and beautiful works of art...
