nuvi backup to a PC - Has anyone been rescued?

Greetings from a nuvi 750 newbie. I found a few discussions of backing up the Garmin nuvi data to a PC and it seems a very worthwhile idea. I've just backed up my data.

I do wonder, though. If while "USBed" to my PC, I accidentally delete a required Garmin file from my nuvi's internal storage causing the nuvi to either crash or not even start up, will copying the file back to the nuvi from the PC make it good-as-new? Has anyone actually been in this position and succeeded?

And what if someone were to accidentally erase everything from the nuvi--or maybe have the PC "format" the nuvi's storage? Will the nuvi be seen by the PC to allow copying everything back to the nuvi to make it work again? Anyone ever experience this?

Thanks.

Yes, I personally had to

Yes, I personally had to restore my files that I backed up back to the nuvi. It has saved me...this was on my c530

Good idea

I guess I should be doing this as well. I'm pretty sure I'll eventually do something stupid.

SD

I never connect my 650 to the computer, I bought a SD Card reader and a 2 gig SD Card and do all my transfers to it. When I put it in the 650 I always press no to transfer the POI's to the unit and let them remain on the SD Card.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm happy to hear that it does work.

What about firmware updates?

An interesting idea--and an extra level of safety, I suppose.

But what do you do about firmware or other updates from Garmin? That requires a nuvi to PC connection, doesn't it?

Not A Problem

There may be several files in your system that are of no use to you at this time. I've deleted this type of file from my nuvi but always stored a back up on my PC. On occasion, I have copied a file back to my nuvi and deleted another. Basically, you are just moving files around from one folder to another.

Updates

I will do an update but first I'll decide if my unit really needs it. I keep 2 backups, one on the computer and one on a CD along with all of my POI files. In the event of a hard drive failure I have a copy of both. Nothing worse than a hard drive failure and all of your custom POI's are gone with it.
