New Vehicles

Garmin has a few new vehicles out - look here. There's an RV that looks like a 1970's/80's era Winnebago, off-roading Jeep, and race car & race truck.

Garmin Cars

Keith,

What the heck is this?

Can you take these "cars" and make them show up on your GPS as Icons to replace the little triangle pointer which indicates your vehicle?

I've nevr seen this and this is the first I've heard of it.

I have a 2730 & a 7500. Will these work for those units?

Thanks. Tim

Yes...

You take these files, install them as directed, and it becomes the pointer on the map.

They are compatible with: nüvi 200, nüvi 200W, nüvi 250, nüvi 250W, nüvi 270, nüvi 680, nüvi 670, nüvi 660, nüvi 610, nüvi 370, nüvi 360, nüvi 350, nüvi 310, nüvi 300, zūmo 450, zūmo 500, zūmo 550, StreetPilot c580, StreetPilot c550, StreetPilot c530, StreetPilot c510.

Garmin Vehicle

Keith,

Thanks for the response.

It looks like my units are not compatible.

Oh well.... it would have been kinda neat to change the pointer.

Regards, Tim

Cute but...

Garmin does a nice job with these optional vehicles. I have downloaded a few in the past. However, I find they are a bit large and do not give you the best visual fix on your position at an intersection. I find I have always reverted back to the default diamond.

Cool

I agree with the above , but still fun to have.

I did the same thing. Tried a few, but always wind up back with the little blue arrow.

Good to know...

Because those car icons aren't compatable with my C340, I thought I was missing out, but looks like I should be happy with my little blue arrow!

Yeah, and just for fun, mouse over the station wagon to make it rotate, and look at the left side of the rear bumper. smile

Make sure that...

Make sure that the vehicle (the .srf file, after unzipping it) is in the "vehicle" folder located in the "Garmin" folder. At least that is how the default is set up on my nuvi. Should work then.

They are cool, but like the others said, it is too big for me so I stick with the blue diamond as well. Bigger the better isn't always the case I guess.

Absolutely brilliant.
Our family SUV is now a Tank.

However - if only Garmin took as much time to work on some of the issues brought up in these and other posts...

Is it possible to move the vehicle from internal memory to a card and still be able use the vehicles in that folder?

Pop culture reference to the movie "National Lampoon's Vacation".

Dog Leash?

My first impression was tail pipe exhaust.

Default Blue Car

The nuvi 200's default is the blue sports car.

--

.

As I said, I'm assuming that it's a reference to the movie "National Lampoon's Vacation". Without getting into all the details, they forgot that they had tied the dog leash (with the dog attached) to the bumper.

Red Dog Leash

After a closer look on my nuvi 200, I agree that it is a red dog leash.

Smaller Vehicles

I notice that the new vehicles are smaller than the original set, but that makes them harder to see unless you are in 3D mode.

I would love a pirate ship.

I would love a pirate ship. My kids refer to my VW van as the pirate ship. I have no idea why, they just do.

Anyone have a pirate ship?

That's a dog leash alright!
The station wagon does resemble The Family Truckster from the movie.
Is that Aunt Edna tied to the roof?

My kids are always wanting me to change the icon to a tank or something. They will love this!

My kids love the car icons.

My kids love the car icons. They always ask why the other cars on the road are not on the GPS as well.

Any suggestions on where to start

I'd LOVE to make my own and pattern them after my car. However I haven't been able to google-up a site that tells me how to do it.

Anybody got a hint?

Thanks much

Blue arrow

Funny thing about the blue arrow... During fooling around with trying some of the downloaded vehicles, I ended up with a different blue arrow for a while. Instead of the usual equilateral triangle, mine was elongated, with a longer tip. I liked that much better. Then I couldn't get it back. The longer arrow never shows in the list. So I deleted all the vehicles in the folder and turned it on. Obviously, the longer arrow is in ROM as the default arrow if none are loaded. Funny thing is, it doesn't show in the list, so you don't know it's there and can't select any other way!

Pop-Up Blocker?

I had to disable my pop-up blocker. After you line up the correct 'dials' on the map, a new window pops up. Two of them are games you must complete. At the end of each game you are given a download option for the the ship.

I have the Nuvi 660 and cannot figure out how to install the vehicles. The instructions don't seem that difficult, but the darn things are not installing on my nuvi. I have downloaded the ones I want and extracted them to the Garmin folder on my computer. Now what? Can someone walk me through it? Thanks a million!!

It's easy

First of all, you need to download the new vehicle file to the Garmin/vehicle folder ON YOUR GARMIN UNIT, not on the computer.

Next, click the wrench icon on the right, then click "Map". Now just click the "Change" button next to vehicle and you can change the vehicle type to whatever is loaded into the directory.
