Icons and sound Nuvi 650

I store all my custom POI's on the SD card and choose not to transfer them to the unit. When I select a Favorite POI from the SD card I never hear the MP3 sound which has the same name as the POI nor when I'm enroute I don't see any of the other custom Icons that are on the card and when I get to the destination I just see the flag. If I view the map I'll see all my custom POI icons but again no sound.
I friend of mine purchased the 360 and he stated he sees all his custom POI icons when enroute to a destination from a favorite.
Do I have to transfer all to the Nuvi from the SD to get that to work?

Thanks all for the help.

.

Did you load the POIs and the associated icons and sounds with POI Loader to the SD card?

You have to zoom in fairly closely to see them on the map screen on most models. And some models don't show the icons on the 3D map screen at all, so you must use a 2D mode.

Did you properly name the BMP and CSV files in order to associate the icons with the POI files when you loaded them with POI Loader?

As to the sounds,

1) did you set alerts for the POIs to which you are referring,

2) are you traveling on the road on which the POI is location and in the direction of the POI,

3) is the POI location sufficiently close (typically 50 feet) to the road to produce an alert,

4) did you properly name the MP3 and CSV files in order to associate the sounds with the POI files when you loaded them with POI Loader?

Did you load the POIs and the associated icons and sounds with POI Loader to the SD card? - Yes I did

You have to zoom in fairly closely to see them on the map screen on most models. And some models don't show the icons on the 3D map screen at all, so you must use a 2D mode. - I tried zooming too and I always use 3D

Did you properly name the BMP and CSV files in order to associate the icons with the POI files when you loaded them with POI Loader? - Yes, like the sound files the name is exactly the same including case.

As to the sounds,

1) did you set alerts for the POIs to which you are referring, - I just found out that if I use manual mode in the loader I could do that, I set the feet to 400

2) are you traveling on the road on which the POI is location and in the direction of the POI, - Yes

3) is the POI location sufficiently close (typically 50 feet) to the road to produce an alert, - Yes

4) did you properly name the MP3 and CSV files in order to associate the sounds with the POI files when you loaded them with POI Loader? - For sure

Thank for the reply

Try one of the 2D modes and zoom all the way in on an area where you know there is a Custom POI icon that you loaded.

You must set alerts for the POIs for which you want to have alerts. Regular POIs don't alert by default. Just having the alert sound loaded won't do it.

And 400 feet is probably too close for POI alerts that you will be driving near. You might want to try 1000 feet.

Here's some great information about alerts.

Garmin 650 behavior

I found the 650 will display sound alerts at any zoom level and 3D and doesn't have to be in the nav. mode. Works with just the map itself showing.... but I think you are experiencing what I first expected. I thought if alerts were enabled poi's would "pop-up" as you drove along. While they may appear to be on the route I'm guessing the actual location is far enough off route not to meet the min. required plus the file name must contain a key word, like speed, redlight and a few others that are referenced.
There appears to be a way to make them show using TourGuide whereby a poi will show if it's within a specified distance or radius of your location..... that's a 2nd term course for me!
File names have an effect on alerts.... see if any of this discussion makes sense.

Lastly I found it helpful to create a single nearby poi and try different names, etc to better understand how these things work.

I read it as though he

I read it as though he copied the files over, not actually "loaded" them onto the SD card. If that is what he did, that is why it doesn't work.

Tell me this, do you get a message asking you if you want to transfer them to the nuvi? If you don't then you didn't load them.

Icons and sounds

I do get the message if I want to transfer them but I don't, I leave them on the SD card. I didn't just copy the files to the SD card I used POI loader.
My trouble is, if I select a custom POI from the EXTRAS and follow it,
1) I don't get an alert, see the Icon nor hear the MP3 sound file that goes with it.
2) As I'm driving to that same destination I don't see any other Icons, the only time I see any Icons is when I have it in View Map mode.

I have never actually routed

I have never actually routed one of my costom pois that had an alert on it. So I can't comment if it should alert or not.

So you see it in map mode, but not in route mode...um, that is sorta weird. If you see it in map mode, you should see it in route mode...I can't come up (of course I have a few beers in me) with anything on the top of my head...or below it.

Sorry.

Try removing the sound file

I use the SD card for storing poi's like you. So far I've loaded all just using the default express mode. A couple days ago we had to hit numerous Walmarts to get 20 glass containers. I would set a WM as my GO to destination. When we arrived, the unit would announce "you have arrived at WM xxxx" If you look at the csv file each WM is listed as WM and a number. I do not have a mp3 associated with the file. I do have a bmp I created and it shows. When in Map View I do not get an announcement as I drive by a WM. You might try removing the associated mp3.
