so is 480x272 the perfect image size for splash screens on the Nuvis?

Nuvi widescreen is 480x272, the smaller 2-300 series is 320x240. Easy enough to resize a jpeg.

Though the non-widescreen nüvis like the 2xx have a screen size of 320x240, the splash screen should be no bigger than 320x160.

The bottom 80 pixels (or so) of the screen are used for the copyright text and mass storage icon. If you make the splash screen 320x240, the nüvi will just shrink it, making the text jagged.

I resized a JPG down for my 200's splash screen, and I did have to leave room for the bottom. But it also leaves "bars" on the sides, and I was just wondering if there was a size that fit the 200 better?

I saved the picture as a jpg on my picture directory but don't know how to change it. I could use the blank one (without text) but I really like the idea of having my email address on it in case it gets lost.

Any photo editing/viewing program will work. A good program (shareware) is IrFanView - just tried it as a test. Others work also.

Hmm, my new splash screen (N370) at 320x240 looks fine, garmin copyright stuff comes on over it. At 180 ugly black space underneath. Not a big deal, except my garmin often sits in front of my keyboard connected to my computer. We obviously all have too much time!

That's odd. On the 2x0 if I make the splash screen 320x240 it just resizes it down so that there is black space around the entire picture.

If you navigate your garmin's file system and find the original splash screen, check the properties and you'll find the dimentions. Then use that size.

If the unit has a picture viewer on it, then it typically has the capability to internally change the splash screen. Typically, this is done on the Display menu screen.

thanks for quick reply. the reason i was curious about it because i was doing checksum and found that its failing on splash screen on my garmin 200w.

Not sure how other units work - just got my 650 last month.

My understanding is that some units have different screen sizes so you may have to upload the splash screen file to a photo editor and resize the image (or let me know the screen size you need and I can upload another template).

I wouldn't worry about that. Mine's like that. I'm not sure if it's because the splash screen I have set isn't the original or some other reason. But there's no impact on the functionality.

I just made two new splash screens for the ZUMO 550. Both are Harley logos set at 320x240. These were my first attempts.

Have you learned a lot about general GPS there as well or is it really just for zumo users?

From my experiments, for the Nuvi non-wide screens, the 480x272 is still the best size for a splash screen.

What file are you guys replacing on your Nuvi's? I am looking for an image file with a splash screen to replace but haven't been successful on my Nuvi 760.

at least on my Nuvi....just needed to drop the photo in the JPEG folder, and then select it in the photo viewer. There's a checkbox on the top that says something like "show this at startup"....that's all there is to it

That's why I submitted the links. We should have a place to keep splash screens and vehicles created by users on this site. Maybe in the future. Tell them to enjoy. If any of them have a Harley Ultra vehicle for use on the ZUMO, ask them to share it. Thanks!

not smart to begin with. If they was, they would think, or know of the consequences of getting caught.
To catch a not so smart thief, you could put this on the splash screen, and maybe find your stolen or lost GPS.

"THIS GPS IS LOCKED-CALL GARMIN(1-800-800-1020) WITH SERIAL NUMBER LOCATED ON BACK TO UNLOCK THIS GPS"

I think they would do that before emailing or calling the rightful owner (unless they were honest).

How about a Favorite of "Free Sex and Beer". And of course, the coordinates are to the local police station. Don't laugh! It might actually work!

Did you read the story (here) of the person who had her GPS stolen and later recovered from a pawn shop? The thief had actually set a Home location before he pawned it. And the rightful owner just read off the saved coordinates to the police when she got it back.

Knowing me, I am much more likely to lose my GPSr (I use a lot as pedestrian) than to have it stolen. So I hope that having my email on the splash screen might get the nuvi back to me. Neal

Living in Manhattan, most of the time the nuvi sits next to my computer, and comes out for trips and rental cars. So I figure is much more likely to be lost than stolen. And, of course, new york is now the safest large city in the country!
