GPS Chipset G

Greetings smile

After making some bluetooth changes on my Nuvi 760, suddendly I notice Webupdater offering an undate "GPS Chipset G" This first occurred just today. Is anyone else seeing this also? I'm a bit afraid to load it. BTW my unit indicates it has SIRF InstanFix technology, so I assume it has the SIRF chipset.

Thanks

.

That is the firmware for the GPS receiver chip. You should install the update. I haven't heard anyone having any problems with the update.

Garmin's code name for chipsets

Chipsets are the actual GPS modules inside the nüvi, antenna, RF, baseband.

Garmin has code names for them :
- Type M : Garmin Bravo
- Type M2 : MTK
- Type G : SiRFstarIII

So Chipset G is exactly SiRFstarIII. You can install the upgrade without any worries.

Type G

Thanks. I was afraid Type G might be a subset of SiRFstarIII, and nowhere in my 660 could I see any indication I had a "Type G".

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

...one anomaly

I have been updating the GPS chipsets on the Nuvi 350, 660, 370, 750 series and found that on the first restart after the update, the unit has problems acquiring satellites.

I power the unit down, and upon restart, the satellite acquisition proceeds quickly with no further problems.

Thank you are all for your responsive and intelligent replies. What a great site this seems to be. smile

I've heard of other having that same issue, but mine didn't on my 650. I wonder why the difference?

I had it on my c580. I guess it depends on the unit

Chipset G update

As an added comment I am happy to mention that since I installed the upgrade to the nuvi 760, I am able to get full bars of signal anywhere in the house within 10-15 seconds after it boots. Pretty impressive compared to before the upgrade!

For the 680...

Is their an update for the 680's? Or is this just for the 650 and others?

Have you run WebUpdater?

gsapatka,

If you haven't done it yet, connect your 680 and run the WebUpdater service. It will automatically scan your device and push down ALL the updates available for your unit. Including the MSN receiver. My 660 recently received an update to the traffic receiver.

It's a good practice to connect up and run the updater on a periodic basis as something just might slip through the cracks. Although the likelyhood of that happening with the folks that are regulars here is slim.

I have a 76CSx with the SirfStar III chipset. But when I connected it and ran the web updater, I did not get any message about a Chip Update.

Does anyone know of a location to look for it ?

Thanks, Tim

Chipset G

I only first noticed it appear on the webupdater after I fooled around with deleting files from the garmin remote folder as I wanted to degrade some bluetooth files to a previous version. It was then the chipset update appeared. That may have been by coincidence only though! smile
