Power Problem

My Garmin 760 worked perfectly fine the night before, This morning it would not turn on no matter what, not by the switch. or even plugging it into the charger just a blank screen, and the green charge light was on the charger. I left it in the charger thinking maybe accidently the battery drained and died, but still nothing.
I tried like 20 times, with no responce.

After work I tried again all day it was just in my jacket pocket, and it worked, now it works every time.

Just wondering if anyone else experienced anything similar? Thanks

Don't know if this will

Don't know if this will help, but someone said you can reboot it by pressing on the bottom right corner and pushing the on switch to the left, holding it for about 8-15 seconds, if I remember correctly.

Thanks, something to try if

Thanks, something to try if it ever happens, i only had it since xmas, hopefully if it happens again garmin would upgrade it to an 880 lol

If the battery was total

If the battery was total dead, it won't come on and to recharge it, you have to do it by the computer usb port, it won't even work with the dc adapter. This is all hear say cause that never happened to me.

Lithium Polymer Batteries

Li-Po batteries have a minimum threshold voltage. If the battery discharges below that level, the charger won't charge it. This is a protection against nasty fires that can otherwise occur from physical changes within the battery. Every battery has protection to prevent discharge below that level, but I'm guessing that somehow it missed this time. Then sitting in your pocket, it can recover slightly and then the charger was able to charge it.

It appears to happen again

It appears to happen again this morning, only in the morning, after sitting in my house all night, its always fully charged in my car, i tried to turn it on a few times, nothing, put it in the dock and still nothing, and usually when its plugged in the car it comes on automatically, but still nothing. So that being i pretty much ruled out a bad sliding switch.

After 10 minutes, and 10 tries, it just worked this morning, stayed on no problem, and worked going home, ill check again tomorrow morning, thanks for the response, comments.

I wonder if the backlight in

I wonder if the backlight in the unit is giving up?! This would cause the unit to APPEAR not to be on when it actuality it was.

Does the 760 offer you the

Does the 760 offer you the option when you turn off the ignition of keeping the unit ON or letting it turn off automatically? If not, maybe it is staying on even when the ignition turns off.

Did you check the state of charge once the unit turned on this morning? I can't remember -- you may have to unplug it to do so. This would tell you a lot.

Also, Garmin has acknowledged some switch problems, but the only one I know of was on the 360, which is a pressure type, not slide.

Yes I get the option to stay

Yes I get the option to stay on or turn off when ignition off. I watch it when ever i actually power down to make sure its off. and my garmin is always fully charged, i only use it in my car with the charger/traffic connected.

I don't have the nuvi, but when my c340 went completly dead, the only way I could get it to restart was by connecting it to the computer with the usb port.

When it was on did you notice how much of a charge it had? Maybe warming up in your pocket got the battery to turn on even though it was low?

How do you know it is charged?

I'm guessing that you mean it must be fully charged because, as you say, it is always plugged in. However, if the charging circuitry or the battery has a problem, that may not be the real situation. Thus, it would eliminate those two possibilities if you verified that the gauge showing battery charge level really does show it as fully charged immediately after you have difficulty getting it to turn on.

Do you by any chance know of anyone with the same car charger or do you have an wall AC adapter that you could use and see if there is any difference? That would rule out the car charger as being the problem. You mentioned the green light, but I believe that just means it is seeing 12V from the battery, not that any current is flowing to the GPS.

I have never noticed any low

I have never noticed any low battery or even hlf, its always full, and when it does finally work its always full, i dont think its a power issue, its just not turning on, and its not the switch cuz it should come on when docked.. im guess something in the firmware or something.

I started it from my house today and it worked fine, and on the way home from work, i left it in the cold car all day it worked, my only corelation i took it from my warm house to cold outside, thats when it didnt want to start, allthough i never had that problem before.

thanks for your advice, I am an electrician i like your troubleshooting views, i was having the same thought process..

from an electrician: you have power, its not my problem, the electronics are probobly bad, get a new one. lol

c340 Did Same Thing

My c340 just quit working after I had gotten the notice that the battery was low. It worked about 45 minutes to 1 hour and then just quit--absolutely dark with no response. I tried recharging through USB and in the car. Nothing--called Garmin support. He had me do a reset, using the button behind the faceplate, and it worked great. Unit came right on and worked perfectly.

scott, I had the same

scott,

I had the same experience once, about a week ago. When I turn off the ignition, I usually tap the message to turn it off. Last week I stopped for gas and forgot to tap the screen, so presumably it turned itself off. When I turned the ignition back on, the unit did not come on. I tried a bunch of times, but nothing. I took it off the cradle and left it off until I got home. Tried a couple of times at home and it suddenly came on. It's been working fine since.

I have no idea why it happened. It was fully charged. I'm just hoping it doesn't happen again.

Yeah, that was weird, I

Yeah, that was weird, I never press "continue on battery power" and never had a problem. Garmins must be programmed by Microsoft...lol.

Power Problem

If your car is wired so that the power outlet (ie cigarette lighter) goes off with the ignition, it is HIGHLY recommended that you turn off or disconnect all devices BEFORE turning the car off..........and you turn the car ON before restoring your portable devices because there can be a HUGE power spike when the car is turning on or off.

yea, the power surge does

yea, the power surge does sound interesting, how do you reset it again, hold the lower left screen and power 15 seconds? and do you lose any info or settings when doing that.

i tried it once but it did nothing cuz the power didnt work lol.

Hold the lower RIGHT hand

Hold the lower RIGHT hand corner, from what I have been told.

Hold the lower right hand corner then push the on switch to the left and hold it for 15-20 seconds. Let us know if it works

I have a question when

I have a question when powering it on, does it come on exactly instantyl, or a few seconds delay?

im wondering if perhaps i was impatient and pressed it a few times too many causing it to like lag or freeze, i really dont know just thinking of a possibility, wierd that it happened 2 days in a row, and im sure im starting it right, i had it since xmass.

If you are getting a spike

If you are getting a spike at power on, then you better get your car checked. By default, you cigarette lighter shouldn't even come on until after the car is started. I know that when I have my radar detector on and then start the car, it restarts because there is a temp break in the power so that you don't get that spike.

also it seems to been

also it seems to been working, so i dont really want to mess with it

yea i get that temporary

yea i get that temporary break also

Power Spike

asianfire wrote:

Any time anything electrical goes on or off there is some kind of spike on the circuit......except for very expensive power supplies for delicate equipment......which a 12V car is NOT!

That is not just a theory on my part. It was listed in a user's manual for something I have, either my cell phone or GPS.

And 40 or so years as an electronics technician tends to make me believe it.

Help with my Nuvi 350 wierd thing that happened

Hello,
I have never posted here, but am so frustrated, and I thought maybe you have had this happen?
My Garmin 350 worked fine on a trip plugged in the whole time with the battery charger. Now today, it will work on battery only and if I plug it into the car charger, the charger symbol comes on the screen but the unit won't work, won't do any of the normal functions?
The chargers are working, cause you can see the unit being charged. But I was always able to have all the functions while plugged in ?
Thanks

I know when plugged into the

I know when plugged into the pc you cant to anythign with the screen, in the cradle u should.

Sure it's the GARMIN charger?

Are you sure you are using the GARMIN car charger? Most of the other USB chargers will put the GPS in storage mode when you plug them in. The Garmin brand charger won't do this. I have on occasion grabbed my cell phone USB charger by mistake and had the same results.
