[TEXAS] "Lubbock red light cameras getting the red light" (that is, being removed)

American Traffic Solutions, the company that runs the system, told city officials Thursday it would shut down the cameras after the city council voted 4-3 to end the red light program and terminate the contract.

The cameras were to be turned off at midnight Thursday.

Cameras were placed at 12 intersections in the city in the past year. A report in January showed an increase in rear-end collisions at intersections — both those with cameras and those without.

The cameras were first delayed after they got caught with short yellows in the beginning. And since they could not shorten the times any further, and they could not put them at intersections that did not have any accidents as opposed to the most dangerous ones, I guess they decided that their only choice was to remove them. No profits....no cameras.

I am surprised. Many of the cities have found the same results, but continue to use them, if not expand operations.
