Why Are Maestros Unable To Show Marine Data?

Hi all, I know that Maestros are not marketed to do the job of something like a handheld marine unit, etc, but I was wondering why they, in theory, couldn't be re-loaded with marine versions of the software? My old pda used to routinely need its OS reloaded if the battery died, which wiped everything, but it still ran as oem. Wonder why a process couldn't be developed that would backup one's current OS, then overwrite a marine-based OS to function on the device if needed...then, when needing the auto version back, just reload the OS again. Firmware upgrades have to be similar in scope, re-installing most of the smart software over the top of the old, just guessing here.

I just find it difficult to see why the device couldn't do double-duty, and was seeking comment on this, not that Magellan would suddenly think "What a great idea!" and do something about it smile

In theory, of course it could.

The Magellan line is just a little computer running Windows CE so most anything is "theoretically" possible.

Look here: (keeping in mind that many of the posts are from people who have "bricked" their units):
