Another "alert" question

I have a nuvi 200 and I downloaded and installed the school zones "west" file. I works great except for one school. For the longest time, I couldn't get the alert to work when passing the school and I have the coordinates on the road directly in front of the school. Now, the alert goes off, but it only sounds for about a second and a half, as does the red banner announcing the school zone. Then, they both disappear. At other school zones, the tone will sound sometimes twice and the red banner will stay on until I pass the school.

Can anybody shed any light on why it would vary like this?

Thanks in advance.

?

What are the coordinates, of this particular alert?

They are -97.09977,

They are -97.09977, 32.896287. I think that you helped me with this before when it wouldn't alert me. Now it alerts, but only the short time.

Thanks,

um.

Well the positioning looks good. Presumably what you're seeing now, is just some vagary of the Nüvi 200.

Does the 200 have adjustable alerts? ... the 3xx has some settings under "Proximity Points | Alerts | Audio". They don't quite seem to do, what they say they're going to do wink ... but, if present, they might provide some 'adjustments'.

Unfortunately, the 200 is

Unfortunately, the 200 is just the basic unit and has no adjustment. I guess that it is just a little quirk in the design.

Alerts

Asianfire has done quite extensive study on alerts and has found that which way you are driving, as well as how far off the road, and many other criteria come into play. Hopefully someone can point you to some of those threads.

Oh, it wasn't really me and

Oh, it wasn't really me and my "extensive study", but rather what I learned on here, basically from hornyby.

Basically though, if they don't alert, it is because the coordinates are too far off the road or you aren't travelling on the road of the POI alert.

Yeah, but there doesn't seem

Yeah, but there doesn't seem to be any consistency as to how the alerts are handled. For instance, my wife and I drove by another school near us today and the red alert message stayed on until we passed the school and almost got out of the school zone. On the Holy Trinity alert, the coordinates are directly in front of the school and in the center of the traffic lane, yet the alert goes off and the red alert message is gone in a second and a half. I double checked the coordinates, as did hornbyp and we both concluded that the coordinates are good. I guess that it's just one of those strange little quirks. I was on the freeway this afternoon and a red light camera alert went off. I was 18 feet above and slightly north of the light (about 20 yards)and traveling perpendicular to the road where the camera is, yet the alert went off. One of these days I'll figure it all out. surprised)

The POI alerts don't "know" anything about elevation. Coordinates are a single plane (2D) system. They don't have information about the z-axis (they aren't 3D). So as far as the unit was concerned, you were at the same elevation as the POI location.

OK, thanks.

OK, thanks.
