Mount on the A/C vent?

Dose anyone use these? i would think the heat/cold would not be good for a gps unit.

Vent Mount

I got a cheap one. It has more "slack" in it than I would like.....the viewing angle tends to change with vibration/bumps but I still like it better than the windshield mount.

I shut the vent OFF behind it so that only a little air comes out. You seldom get heat from those vents and a little cool won't hurt.

One caution: In the summer time, it will get somewhat cold, even with the vent closed. If you then take it out in the hot humid air, it will collect water REAL fast.....not good.

ProClip for Vent

I am using a ProClip (proclipusa.com) vent mount for my Nuvi 660 right now. I have noticed no issues during the winter mainly because the heat is generally directed towards the floor and window. However when summer comes, the AC will be going through the vent.

I called Garmin technical support and asked them if they had any issues with vent clips, particularily during the summer with AC and leaving the vehicle into hot humid air.

The tech guy said there should be no issues ... the Nuvi is assembled with seals that will help prevent moisture and that he has heard of a lot of people using vent clips and that does not seem to be an issue for their products.

The tech guy did say not to leave the Nuvi in the vehicle during the winter where the temperature will drop below freezing or summer when it will get above 140'F (60'C).

I am actually having a power adapter installed under the dash this weekend and the power wire run in behind, so I want to make sure the cool air in the summer won't hurt the Nuvi. I also have a ProClip for my vehicle to mount the Nuvi on the passenger side about knee height, but I found that I could not angle the Nuvi up enough for my liking down there.

I use a vent clip with my c530. I don't see any problems with the heat or cool as they are both less than the extremes the unit would normally be exposed to. Particularly with the heat, a windshield mount in the summer has much more heat pouring onto the GPSr.

Vent Mount

I be a little corncerned about condensation in the Summer. If your unit is say 50F and then you bring it outside with a 75F dewpoint, any place the air touches the unit (both inside or outside) will leave condensation behind. The good news is that as the unit heats up it should be pushing air out and not sucking it inside.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

another question on the vent

I live in Manitoba,i have a windshield mount as well for my nuvi 250.We use the windshield vents to defrost the windshield during winter.Would the heat coming from there not over heat the unit as well? It was just a question that crossed my mind

I have the same concern.

I would be especially worried about running the A/C onto the GPS unit for fear of causing condensation on the screen if you are in very hot weather.

Cool down the GPS with cold air, then turn it off and it gets to be 110 inside the car.

keeping your cool

Yea, best thing is 2 keep the gps in the fridge then bring it outside in a cooler, cool the car down first then take it out...lol.Just a silly idea.

Mount Clip

Yes I use the car vent mount clip- Purchased at ebay. $20.00- Not the cheaper version they sell on ebay(the vent mount that explains to you that you need the straight tip usb connector when plugged into cigarette lighter outlet. Meaning the usb connector that comes with your garmin when purchased(cigarette light adapter) which comes in 90 degree angle. Personally, the fit is fine. Doesn't really move around at all. I turn off my center airvents when using the GPS during winter/cold weather time. During summer time, I leave the vents open with the Nuvi there. No problems so far. Don't know about heat. I like the air vent mount a lot better than the Suction cup, which doesn't even work anymore.

Vent Mount

I have this vent mount for my nuvi 350. http://www.mountguys.com/product_p/mfx47-nuvi.htm
It fits the unit perfectly and has a lock so the power cord does not fall out. The mount sits almost 3 inches off the vent and I have not had any heating or AC issues. At $16 it's worth it.

Don't think the the change

Don't think the the change of temps is good for it.

Love the Vent

I use the vent style with my nuvi 360. I have the mount which uses the original garmin mount. This is helpful because I don't have to plug the power connector in and out from the side every time.

I got my mount from the mount guys.

This one which I ordered came with a second garmin mount.

I have had no issues and just snaping the unit in is great.

An alternate

An alternate suggestion-

I've purchased a Bean-Bag Mount, for my Nuvi --at Best-Buy, and it's truly the way to go, for me. You can choose from several places to set your GPS, it's never in harms way from vent-air, and you can still hide all the evidence when you are out of your car.

Bean Bag

Does it every move going around a curve? Are you a "tame driver"?

Other Mounting Options

They also make a long flexible goose neck that attaches to the floor bolt on your seat.

If the temp of the air coming out of your vents exceeds the operating temp range of the unit I want your car... must be very cozy

Definitely not tame!

salleentn wrote:

Nooo-no-no, I'm not a tame driver. I have only had the beanbag for a short while, now. So far.. so good!

When I first used the beanbag, I tugged it around a bit, to test the theory. It was pretty tough to move... which boosted my confidence. It's heavy, and has a gripping (anti-skid) bottom-surface. Pretty well built, I'd say.

And oh yea-the

And oh yea-

the Beanbag-mount is also referred to as a "Friction-Mount", and for good reason, I might add. [the thing really hangs on, where you set it!]

I doubt it, I live in Ontario and never had an issue.

You could use the e-Mount

You could use the e-Mount Part Number 93-01-430-230J instead of a bean bag - that's what I use (its a little steadier for the 7200 units).
