Great site - learning all kinds of things.
Just tried to create a new splash screen for my nuvi 650
Here is an example of my first attempt:
http://s259.photobucket.com/albums/hh294/cdnrver/?action=vie...
How do I go about..
How do I go about downloading this Splash screen to my Garmin C530? How do I change the contact info as well? Please dumb it down and walk me through it.
.
Do you have the user manual for your unit?
That's step 1. Get the user manual.
Step 2. Look on page 19 of the user manual. It says to change the splash screen you go to Wrench/Settings > Display > Splash Screen > Change ... but first you must load a JPG image file while your GPS unit is connected to your computer using the USB Mass Storage Mode. This is detailed on pages 14 and 15 of the manual.
As far as changing the contact info, do you mean on that splash screen picture? You would need to use some program on your computer (Photoshop, MS Paint, etc) to put that information on the picture.
The optimal size is 320 x 240
The optimal size is 320 x 240 pixels for the C530.
Computers are useless. They can only give you answers. - Pablo Picasso (Bob - Garmin c530, eTrex Vista HCx)
I agree
Knowing me, I am much more likely to lose my GPSr (I use a lot as pedestrian) than to have it stolen. So I hope that having my email on the splash screen might get the nuvi back to me. Neal
I agree with you. That's why my splash screen and the first template I posted (the one with the text on it) has: "If lost please contact ..."
I don't know why the "if stolen issue" came up. Are there people that naive who would actually put "If stolen please contact" on their units (laughing)?
My splash screen
I'm a new 1st time granddad. I use a pic of my grandaughter for my splash screen (geez, how sappy!!!)
--- GPSmap 60CS, Nuvi 650 & Nuvi 1490T---
I am the optimistic
My screen, taken from your's, is more optimistic, it says "if found ..."
Now if I were truly an optimist, I would say "when found ..." though of course that would imply I would lose it first!

Nuvi 255W/European SD card
"If found" is what I use on
"If found" is what I use on my digital cameras (personal, and one for work). The first photo in the camera has my contact information, and it's locked so I don't inadvertently delete it. It also says "Reward For Return".

i have done my first splash screen from the templet above ...now how do i upload it to the site?!
Everyday is a GREAT day :)
Clarification Please?
i have done my first splash screen from the templet above ...now how do i upload it to the site?!
Have you created a variation of the template above that you now wish to share with other members for their use? Or, have you produced a splash screen from the template and you need advice on how to load it onto your unit?
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

i have used the locked temp. above and made one for my c530 that i would like to share

can any of these be used on
can any of these be used on the Garmin c330? Thanks as I am a newbie here on what I can and can't do with my GPS. I just use it to get from a to b. I'm already kinda kicking myself for not getting a 500 series when i bought this one in '06.

You need to use xImage.

Designed for my Nuvi 200.
I've put a lot of thought
I've put a lot of thought into creating an EFFECTIVE splash screen, to maximize my chances of having the unit returned to me in case of loss or theft. I've incorporated some ideas I haven't seen anywhere in the Poi Factory threads, so I thought I'd share my ideas here.
To my mind, I see the following problems with using the standard "Reward If Found" type splash screen:
1) I really don't want to post my personal contact information to a thief (phone number, email addy, etc.)
2) It's uncomfortable to me having to talk to, correspond with, and meet the thief to effect a return of the stolen property.
3) It's probably equally uncomfortable for the thief to contact me, for obvious reasons, so the chances of having a stolen unit returned using that method are probably slim to none. The thief would probably throw the GPS in the trash & go steal another one, rather than take a chance with a face to face meeting.
To overcome these obstacles, I use Stuffbak
http://www.stuffbak.com/sb/about/what.aspx
(a loss protection & recovery service) along with a custom made splash screen.
TO QUOTE THEIR WEBSITE:
StuffBak is the comprehensive loss protection service that helps you get your lost stuff back. StuffBak's system works by combining the advantages of the world wide web and high-tech communication methods with the simplicity of permanent ID labels. In a nutshell, you place STUFFBAK® labels on all your important gear. Then if something disappears, the label tells the finder how to return it, and get a reward too. Perhaps as important, StuffBak acts as an intermediary between owner and finder, so all your personal information remains personal.
StuffBak's service is also affordable. Retail labels, tags and cases include lifetime registration and two years free recoveries. After your coverage period has expired, you pay a $29.95 transaction fee plus shipping (unless your account has been upgraded to an Enhanced Service plan, in which case there is no recovery fee for 5 years). It's also convenient and there is no cost for finders. They simply take the item to a nearby StuffBak-approved drop-off center (UPS Stores, FedEx, etc) or StuffBak arranges for courier pickup. They don't have to pack the item or pay for shipping.
The StuffBak label on the back of my GPS looks like this:
http://i34.tinypic.com/acft68.jpg
The service is dirt cheap....you can get a lifetime registration for $5 or less. I use it for all sorts of personal property, including keyrings.
In conjunction with the StuffBack service, I use a custom made splash screen, which stresses to the thief that:
1) their anonymity is guaranteed
2) a reward is offered
3) the stolen GPS is useless to them but they can still SAFELY, QUICKLY & EASILY claim a cash reward for their efforts, with no risk to them.
It goes without saying that you always have to have your GPS locked, for this to have a chance of working. There's still no guarantees, but this method probably increases my chances of recovering my property. StuffBak isn't some fly by night operation. They are stable & have been in business for many years. There's a slew of major newspapers, TV stations, etc. that have done undercover testing of StuffBak's effectivness, & the results have always proved out to be very high.
I've posted a JPG template of my splash screen here:
http://i34.tinypic.com/15fjci0.jpg
If anybody wants to use this template, I've uploaded a copy here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/134091583/Reward_For_Return_Temp...
It's made for nuvi wide screens (480 x 232) in an editable .psp image format.....meaning that you can load it in Paint Shop Pro & edit it to your liking, then save a copy as a JPG. Or just make your own, incorporating some of these ideas.
Where's the splash screen...........
When I click on the link I get
"The specified image does not exist" and some pictures of a resort.
I don't get a splash screen image.
What's up?

Trapper,
Nicely explained. I'd never heard of the service before. Thanks for sharing all the work you did.

splash screen size
If you want the size of the splash screen on your unit, connect your gpsr to the computer, go to the garmin folder , look in the jpeg folder, the pics should show up, put the mouse cursor on the pic and it will show the file and size the 650 is 480x272 and make your pic the same size and then copy it to the jpeg folder on the gpsr,

Ok..here are my contributions...

Make Your Own Personlized Screen
We added our own splash screen with a personalized digital pic. To do this on the 660nuvi go to the tool (wrench) symbol press then to the display icon then to the splash screen & hit change you can select a pic from the internal storage or a memory card.
To get pics (you can download more than 1) onto your nuvi just connect the nuvi to your computer via a usb cable. If you dont already have a nuvi drive on your pc this should create one, then copy & paste your pics (jpeg files) to the nuvi drive.
Also after downloading numerous pics (we have downloaded about 18 to ours) you can play them as a slideshow.
To do this go to the main screen to the travel kit & select picture viewer & then select view images from internal memory & then select slide show.
You need to look from a different perspective
1) I really don't want to post my personal contact information to a thief (phone number, email addy, etc.)
2) It's uncomfortable to me having to talk to, correspond with, and meet the thief to effect a return of the stolen property.
3) It's probably equally uncomfortable for the thief to contact me, for obvious reasons, so the chances of having a stolen unit returned using that method are probably slim to none. The thief would probably throw the GPS in the trash & go steal another one, rather than take a chance with a face to face meeting.
No, the thieves will not call you. But the police or a pawn shop might, as well as an unsuspecting new owner who bought it from the trunk of a car or on eBay.
Read the link below of a woman to had her stolen GPS returned because it had her personal contact info in it.

Thanks for your point of view, I'm in agreement with you.
Bad link at the begining???
When I click on the link at the begining of this post, I get " the specified file does not exist" and then 9 pics of a resort. The other links work just fine.
Generic splash screen....
I've used this generic splash screen on my nuvi's.
I have my name and phone # in the blanks.
I used MS paint to edit.

Use Garmin Lock
I wouldn't expect the thief to call me.
I would be satisfied just knowing it would be useless to them, but since I travel alot, there is a chance I may lose it or possibly leave it in a rental car.
I would hope that if someone found it, they would be honest and contact me.
Just my 2 cents.
Template has a typo
I've posted a JPG template of my splash screen here:

Thanks for the info! However, do you know the website is spelled incorrectly here? (www.stufbak.com instead of www.stuffbak.com) 'www.stufbak.com' goes to a weird website.
Hopefully others that downloaded the splash screen will read this...

Wow...nice catch, larry_larry. Thank you.
I inadvertently uploaded an old mockup, instead of my final correct version. I'll PM Miss_POI to edit my post & insert the correct URLs.
In the meantime, here's the correct versions:

I've been using your template ever since you posted it. I have stuffback lables on all 3 gps units, and on 3 cell phones. I also have one of the round tags on my keyring.
Thanks for posting about stuffback and for supplying a good template that I was able to modify with my own owner numbers.
GPSMAP 76CSx - nüvi 760 - nüvi 200 - GPSMAP 78S
Ideal size for 265WT
I just wanted to add that after a spending some time with guess and check, 480x210 works best on my 265WT. Anything larger or smaller and the nuvi resizes it leaving black bars on the sides. The 265WT forces a black bar on the bottom of the screen where the loading info comes up, hence this shorter size.
nuvi 255w
I have lost my splash screen when gps boots up the screen is gon. I have went to settings and used image as splash screen bu it will not work, I have even tried to revert back to orignal GARMIN splash screen, can someone help pls
If you still have the original images on your computer...
try to copy them back to the GPS. Make sure they are in a folder called "Garmin".
Thanks for the template.
Thanks for the template.
