POI Proximity Alerts

If I have several POIs loaded on my Garmin will they both be bound by the same proximity alert distance? (ie- I want to set rest areas to 1 mile but I also want to load red light enforcement cameras and obviously need that alert to be closer to the camera).

If you use POI Loader

If you use POI Loader application from Garmin to load onto GPSr you can load the POIs separately in the "MANUAL" mode and set the distances for the proximity alerts for the individual POIs to distances and/or speeds to your liking !

Yes and it's a unfriendly Garmin design that forces you to use manual mode.

However, this is hardly the only case of Garmin user unfriendly software design.

Thanks for the help, I am

Thanks for the help, I am going to try this tonight

Garmin's POI Loader

Garmin's POI Loader does not REQUIRE you to set proximity alerts manually !
You have the option to allow it to load automatically !!!!!!!

proximity points

It's good though to be able to do it manually-I use the default values for all except red light cameras, which I cut down the default on since I was getting too many warnings about what turned out to be the intersection at the next street over. I only care about the street I'm on, not the one parallel to me.

Proximity Alerts

Thanks, MrKenFL, I appreciate the prompt reply.

Of course you can use the automatic default.

Buy you took my comment out of context. Go back and read what I quoted with my comment. See where the user wanted to set 1 mile? How do you do that in automatic mode? Not, you have to use manual mode and what a pain that is to have to go through each file.

CLEARLY what's needed is to specify proximity distance within the file for all of the following points in the file. Now you could use the automatic mode buy not have the automatic defaults.

.

I really don't want to start an argument, but I'm not sure why you seem to have such issues with Garmin's software.

But to answer your specific issues, you can set automatic defaults. You can use the GPX specification and set whatever alerts you want which will be automatically loaded.

You can also set automatic speed alerts in a number of simple ways.

And to the OP, the redlight file will have an automatic 0.25 mile proximity alert set by having the word "redlight" in the filename.

And you can set automatic alerts by using other keywords in the filename.

I, for one, am AMAZED that we can load as many Custom locations of our choosing by use of a SIMPLE text file. No difficult programming. No special code. Almost nothing to learn. AND we can load custom icons and alerts JUST BY NAMING THE FILE THE SAME. OMG!!! How simple and easy and user friendly is that.

No complicated coding. Almost no synatax. And for people who want more beyond the basics, such as dialable phone numbers, Garmin supports the GPX file format and even provides the XML code in the POI Loader help file. How simple is that!

I'm with you MM

I didn't choose to get into any type of verbal discussion with other writers re: Garmin software -
I find the software available simple to use and very useful. Yes - there have been occasions when everything didn't work 100% but usually an e-mail to Garmin tech support got the problems resolved !

I'm a Happy Camper !!!!! but I've observed in my 70 + years , some people will "complain" about a free lunch !

and MM - it's a pleasure reading all your extremely useful posts ! Keep up the good work !!! I

Talk about easy!! Even I can use the garmin software with ease. However, I can't understand most of the computer file manipulation and talk on this thread??

Setting up Alert Sounds and Images coming up

I was wondering if I could make it where certain custom poi's make an alert sound and the icon come up on my map and other custom poi's don't. Let's say I have Wal-Mart, Costco, and Red Light cameras. I want to set the Red Light cameras to where it notifies me each time and then I want Wal-Mart and Costco not to alert me or anything. I don't care if the icon shows up on the map or not but I don't want it to make any type of sound. Is there a way to do this?

Yes

If you run POI Loader in Manual mode, you will be prompted to set alerts or not set alerts for each file.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

alert settings

realdeal make sure when using the manual setting don't select ignore file or it will not get loaded to the gps unit. For the ones you don't want alerts for leave settings blank and go to the next one.It should also be noted that redlight cameras will give a 1/4 mile alert because the word redlight is in the file name. You don't have to do anything for this alert to work. You can change this setting by using the manual mode if you want.

Thanks alot! I think I got it now.

POI Alerts

I would like to "adjust" a current spped trap file to alert me at different speeds. I have locations for speed traps in cities and on highways and would like the alerts to go off if I am over speed for that location -vs- all at the same speed.
How would I go about doing that.
Thanks

Alerts for exceeding speed

If you just name the individual waypoints within the POI file like this: "South Wilson Rd-A 35mph@40"

I get a GREY alert bar and tone alert showing the speed of 35 mph. If I exceed 40 mph I get a tone alert and a RED alert bar. You can also add a MP# voice alert to replace the tone alert.

HHanna,
Thank you very much. I will give that a shot. Should I just load the file normal or do I use the Manual option. I think it's normal, just want to be sure.
Thanks

Load the alert with express mode

You can load the POI in the express mode. The alert is set with the numbers (35mph@40) in the waypoint name.
