how to delete foreign language files?

I tried a search and the FAQ section but could not find instructions on how to do this. Can someone point the way or better yet just tell me? Thanks

More Info

It might help to post what you are trying to delete the language's from.

By all means, regardless of what, make sure you BACK UP all your files before you make any changes.

From a Nuvi 650

I see you have a Nuvi 650. You can hook it to your PC and open files...You should be able to see all the files just like the files on your computer. Like said above Back up your files first. I made a file on my PC called backup 650 and copied the entire content to that file. Then I deleted the unwanted files.

u should be able to see the

u should be able to see the individual folders when you click on the garmin device. Once you click on the appropriate folder, the list of all the languages will be visible. Delete the languages u dont need. I only kept American English and Spanish.

deleting language files

With your unit hooked to the computer. Open the Garmin folder - then open the Voices folder. Delete what you know you don't need. Then go to the Garmin - Help Folder. Delete all the help files in languages that you aren't going to need. You can delete a lot of other things, if you are trying to gain space.

no need

No need to back-up voice files, they can be anytime reloaded through webupdater; same for vehicle icons' files.

Now, with the system files... that's a different story!

“There is always a solution; the only challenge is to find the best one”

Unwanted language files

You can do the same with the help & text files.
But follow all other post advice about doing backup to your pc (& sd card if want to).
Should you decide to sell your unit, the buyer would want all files intact as it came from factory
and it would be very easy to restore (copy) them back to unit if needed.

Deleting Language Files

I read Your answer to deleting Language files. I have my Garmin C330 hooked up to my computer and it will not let me see the Garmin much less the files. I have POI Loader to add POI's and need to delete the language files but English. PLEASE HELP !!!!! ANYONE !!!!!

USB

When you plug the Garmin into the USB port to you get the ring sound? If you don't get the ring sound or see the Garmin, which would show up as a drive (probably E) under My Computer, try another USB port. Or I would restart the computer. Rebooting solves a lot of my problems.

Slow down. Take a deep breath. And relax.

Unfortunately, the c330 does not present itself to the computer as a USB Mass Storage Device and therefore, there is no way to delete the files as described in this thread. Sorry.

Extra language files

I have the Language Pack installed on my Nuvi 770, when I deleted all of the extra languages from the voice directory to make extra room, I had lost all the spoken feature of the Language Pack.
Does anyone know which languages should be left undeleted in the "Voice" directory so that the Language Pack is not affected.
It might sound simple but it's not, for example " Latin American Spanish" is not listed in the "Voice" directory, at least nothing with the word Latin.
Thanks

Files for language

In my nuvi 200 there are two files for American English, which is the only language I need. I moved both those from the Voice folder into a new folder in Garmin which I named Amer Eng. Then I moved the rest of the Voice folder out of the Garmin and onto my desktop (I think I copied then deleted). I unplugged the GPS, checked the language screen and next to Voice it said "not available" or something like that. I had to go back to the Garmin folder and change the name Amer Eng back to the name Voice to get the voice function to work again.

I'm not sure this helps you, but it worked for me.

In my previous message I am

In my previous message I am referring to the optional language pack, it seems like the pack uses the already installed voice files. I, like you wanted to keep only the English files but then my language pack stopped working as a result.

Delete Nuvi Language Files

I just deleted 200+Mb of unused language files from my Nuvi 660 (after backing up of course) - but oddly it did not free up any memory. I still show only 2Mb free.

And when I tried to reload one of the files from the backups, it gives me the "drive full" message.

Any idea what's going on here?

Thanks

Only the SHADOW KNOWS...The language files I deleted and backed up was 356,703,220mb. What was the folder name you deleted the files from?

Bobby: The folder is Garmin

Bobby:

The folder is Garmin nuvi (G:)/Garmin/Voice. It originally had 60 files totaling 340Mb. The filesnames all have the .vpm extension.

When you attach the unit to the computer with the usb cable and go to my computer and do a properties inquiry on the drive for the garmin what does the space show?

--
Bobby....Garmin 2450LM

It shows 2,010,820,608 used

It shows 2,010,820,608 used and 2,306,048 free - which is about what it showed before I deleted (I didn't write it down, but I think it's exactly the same). By the way, I also have a 2Gb SD card full of mp3's in the slot.

Jay

Card

The card would show as a separate drive from the NUVI and would have no bearing on trying to copy the other files to the NUVI.If you deleted files it had to change. How many bytes in the files you are trying to copy over to NUVI? Are you sure you aren't trying to copy to the card?

The file I'm trying to copy back (as a test) is only 14Mb. It's just one of the 50 or so files I deleted so there should be plenty of room. I agree that none of this makes sense.

I'm sure of the drive because it has all the other original Garmin files and folders. Just so you know, I'm fairly good with computers but this one has me stumped.

I've just tried pasting and deleting files to the nuvi internal memory and this is strange - files added and deleted from the "mps" or "jpeg" folders work normally, but files deleted from the "garmin" folder refuse to free up space. So adding and deleting the same small file over and over again will eventually consume the entire drive space. Anyone else seen this?

Support

You have everyone stumped with this one I think...Call Garmin support and they will be more than happy to discuss and correct the problem I am sure. It is hard trying to come up with a solution not being able to converse with voice to ask questions.

Out of curiosity what is the exact file name of the file you are trying to put back on the NUVI?

Bobby....Garmin 2450LM

The Nuvi has hidden memory

The Nuvi has hidden memory which is not shown through the Mass Storage Device driver. Sounds like your removals are not being reflected in the hidden memory.

Please back up all files first then push and hold the reset button on the back of your Nuvi. On My Nuvi 350 the reset button is just under the pop out antenna.

If that still did not fix the storage I would try the remove all USER data from the maintenance menu.

Empty the trash / recycle bin.

This will free up the space that is being taken up by the deleted files.

I accidentally deleted the .GTT Files in the TEXT Folder. I have a NUVI 200. I didn't backup the files. Is there any way that I can get these files back? Please help!

Un-delete them from your Recycle Bin.

"Delete nothing, back up everything"

I don't see the recycle bin!

I tried the steps on the other forum. I changed the view to show the Hidden Files, but I still don't see the recycle bin in the GPS folder. I opened the normal recycle bin and they're not in there either. I'm using Vista basic. Am I doing something wrong?

I only need the .gtt file for english.

Thanks again.

Hmmm

Are you looking at the root directory of the GPS on the PC (My Computer or equivalent)?

--
"Delete nothing, back up everything"

I don't see it... =(

Yeah, I'm looking at the root directory. I start at My Computer and work my way through the GPS.

Thanks.

Are you here?

Have a look: http://members.shaw.ca/cgy_guy/images/root_dir.jpg

Under View Folders, make sure you have 'Hide protected operating system files' UNCHECKED. Then, try it again.

Cheers!

Glad to be of service... I take it you recovered your files?

A word of warning... If you delete the files from recycle, you're screwed. You can't recover them, albeit with few exceptions. If you choose to restore them all, all of them will be back on the GPS (i.e. Fav's, etc.). Be careful, folks!

Estra Language Filew

I deleted all the extra languages like you did and my Language Pack would now show the speaker. I added only the three languages I neeced for the trip I am going to take, Spanish, French, Italian. The speaker icon now will show for these languages. My language pack will not speak now because of the last update for nuvi. I spoke with Garmin and they copied my files and said they would have the fix for the language pack on their next update. Hopefully they will.

How to recognize which text files are in which language

I have deleted unwanted voice and keyboard languages, but it's much more difficult to recognize languages in the text file names. Is there such a thing as a list with translation for guidance?

I don't remember ever seeing a list. Given that you're in Canada, this may offer some help:

English language text files start with en_xx, where the xx is either AU for Australian or GB for Great Britain. To my knowledge, we North Americans use the GB version.

Anf if you're near Quebec, this may help. French files begin with fr_xx, where the xx is either CA for Canadian French or FR for French French.

As long as you've save all the others in a backup in case they're needed, I expect you can safely delete all other text files. The text files are numerous but they're not very large so deleting them doesn't gain a lot of storage.

Deleting text files

Thank you for your reply.

I would like to keep English, French, Italian and Spanish, but will probably delete the rest.

No, the NA text files are 'burnt in' and can't be deleted. It's to ensure there is always one available.

What if the device is bought in Great Britain? Does that mean there is an en_NA set of files and no en_GB set?

No

The only text files permanently available are the NA ones, no matter where you buy it, all others are added as necessary. Garmin ships them with text files for all languages, like others I always delete the ones I don't want (although I also back up the lot when I get a new nuvi so can always restore them if needed).
