POI Reminder for those of you with differet type Garmins....

I do this occasionally and thought a reminder would be helpful...
Due to differing types of Garmins I use, all with same POI selections.... 660 & a 2689.....

My 660 used MP3 audio, 2689 uses wav. I also have some customized larger Icons in the 2689 than 660...

Seeing that I use same POILoader for both units, I found it simpler to have two directories: 'Poi Loader' for 660, and 'Poi Loader New' for 2689, and both directories contain all the POI and custom audio and bmp changes I want to use..

Reminder to self and others... When you go into PoiLoader, make sure you select the correct folder for the unit you are trying to update, or, as in my case today, you'll get tones for POI's instead of audio on the 2689!

Another way to associate

Another way to associate the difference is MP3 = 3 digit model Nuvi.

I'm not really lost.... just temporarily misplaced!

Different approach.

I have taken a different approach. My nuvi 755T and 855 support MP3, where my 3597LMTHD only supports WAV. So I use just one folder for my POI files and use all .WAV files for sound, That way it will work on all 3 devices. I only need to run POI Loader once. The same .gpi output file will work on all 3 devices.

One advantage to the separate folder method, especially when updating a 3597 and older units, is that many folks will have customized their icons by enlarging them for the 3597. By having two folders, you have the large icons for the 3597 and the older icons for the older nuivs.

Excellent point Craig!

As always smile

Just curious what would be the result of larger icons downloaded to the older model. I enlarged some of my Icons for the 2597 and use the same folder to download to my old 265 and haven't noticed a problem.The Walmart Icon is one that I enlarged and it shows OK on both devices.

Just checked the camera file and the bmp is 32x32 .POI Factory has used that size for some time. It shows on both of my units OK.

Interesting. I never tried my enlarged icons made for my 3597 in an old nuvi thinking they'd appear to be way too big.

Will a larger icon will appear larger on an older nuvi? Doesn't that cover more of the map display? I may have to try my larger icons on my 855 or 2460.

Not suer

Not sure trying for example 48x48 on your 855 would actually display that size. I read somewhere on another forum. That the 2012 models will accept up to 48x48 BMP and the older models up to a 24x24 BMP. PoiLoader really has nothing to do with what size is displayed.That depends on the unit itself. Older models based on what I remember on the post would clip the icon to 24x24.

Back to the original post about maintaining two files.
Members have reported they have taken the model with MP3's and converted them to WAV files .Installed Wav files to newer unit.Installed sox.exe to the computer, Then they could maintain one file that covers both devices.

One member stated he kept the MP3'S for the older model and WAV'S on the newer model in the same file.Installed sox.exe on computer and he had no problems.

Maintaining one file seems the way to go. Running two files is still going to get you the same result compared to one file in the end results. Using a 48x48 on my Nuvi 2597 does take up a lot of area.

Once I started playing with

Once I started playing with Icon Size, I found your suggestion, Craig, using two folders, one for each Garmin, was the way to go... But then I started forgetting to check which folder I last used (remembered in POILoader).... and hence, the 'reminder' smile!

I use 48x48 on my 3597. I tried 48x48 on my 855. It has been a long time, but my recollection was that the 855 cropped the icon to the top left 24x24. I really like the detail available with the 48x48 pixel icon. I only wish the Garmins would accept .PNGs with transparency for POI icons.

@baumback

Thanks for confirming about older models clipping the 48x48 to 24x24. Like you posted the detail is really nice on the larger icon.

@baumback

If you're looking for more detail from your 24x24 icons on the 855, try increasing the color depth to 16-bit or 24-bit and see if it works. My devices are different from yours, but when I changed the color depth to 24-bit it worked perfectly on the 200W, 255W, and 1300LM in the house.

This is an interesting thread. I never thought of making these kinds of changes. Especially the icon sizes and colors.

Good tip, fortunately all my Garmins are the same or similar, making easier for me, I guess.

Icons

Took a short trip today and it gave me the chance to see how the 48x48 icons view on the GPS screen while navagating.The KFC,Dairy Queen,McDonald's,Urgent Care and WIFI really looked nice. The standard ones like you find in favorites compared to the 48x48 not in the same league.
