Garmin Lock?

I was just reading a couple of other posts that mentioned it, and I was wondering how many actually use it. If so, why???? I mean, if someone steals your GPSr, then finds out later that it's useless to them, aren't they just going to toss it in the trash? They aren't going to bring it back saying "Since it won't work for me, I just thought I might as well give it back. Have a nice day!" You'll never see it again anyway, and I just see it as an inconvenience to getting going when I get in my car.

I just don't see any advantage in bothering with it.

I Agree

If you want to lock your GPS then do it but don't think you are safe just because you have set a password in your GPS.

Exactly. If I am stupid enough to leave it in my vehicle and it gets stolen, I want it to be a piece of junk the thief cannot use or make it require a pile of work to get it unlocked. I would rather they throw it in the trash then get some benefit from stealing it.

I am not concerned about security of data because, as I pointed out above, there are other avenues for getting that information.

I completely agree with this! -

Yea, this is good.

Garmin Lock

I think this lock is a great feature as I have lots of personal data on my GPS and I do not want anybody messing with it or even looking at it. Kudos to Garmin !

garmin lock

never used it

-Use those locks-

-Use those locks-

If everyone did, and the thieves (who count on few owners bothering to take the couple of seconds to unlock them every time) could never turn any of them over for a quick buck... the popularity of stealing them would be lower! It's not just the $150 to $850 or more for another GPS, it's also the (as much as) $1,600, or more to repair window damage, not to mention the collateral damage to the property of your fellow GPS-people who really don't want broken into just because there are folks who don't bother with a silly little thing like unlocking their unit EVERY TIME and therefore offer an actual incentive to thieves everywhere. Simply take the pay-off out of the hand of the thief by locking the GPS!

And I completely disagree. Not all GPSs have Garmin Lock (thus the name "Garmin"), so thieves will continue to have an incentive to snatch GPSs. Theft is prevented by taking the GPS with you, not by locking it and not by "hiding" it under a seat or in the glove box. And if you do that, there is no need to lock it.

Garmin Lock

I use the lock all the time, if someone is going to rip me off I will know that they can't use it.

What about - - -

Why do you disagree so much, do you mean to tell me that no body but "GARMIN" has any kind of lock on their units????????????

Since I only own Garmin, I really don't know what the other brands do for their loyal customers.

I take mine with me too, and recommend that people don't leave theirs in the car either, BUT still LOCK it none the less --just in case I slip up once in a while. It's a second layer of protection. How hard can it be to do a quick four number unlock?

ID Splash Screen

I use Garmin Lock, an ID Splash Screen (so it can't be pawned), and have the Security location set to a place not likely to be visited by the thief.

I love the idea of an ID Splash Screen but Nuvi 765t does not allow you to change the screen. Ugh!

What?

Another use for the Lock...

I don't know if anybody mentioned this already, but the Garmin Lock is very useful for those who have curious kids who are constantly trying to get their hands on the GPS.
