Using Custom POI icons in Mapsource

I found the following info in mapsource help. I gave it a try and it works great.

You can add customized symbols for your waypoints. MapSource includes 8 default custom waypoint symbols located on your computer in "My Documents\My Garmin\Custom Waypoint Symbols." You can open these symbols with a graphic editor and use them as templates for creating your own symbols.

You can add up to 64 custom waypoint symbols. These symbols must be in .bmp format and must be named numerically from "000.bmp" to "063.bmp." Custom waypoint symbols can be 16 x 16 pixels (small) or 24 x 24 pixels (large) and up to 32-bit color.

After you have created customized waypoint symbols, you can add them to a waypoint using the Symbol field in the Waypoint Properties window. See Editing Waypoint Properties for more information.

.

This was discussed in another thread few months ago. The problem with setting custom icon in MapSource is that when you load these waypoints to your GPSr (via POI Loader), they'll be referencing a symbol that doesn't exist.

Garmin nüvi® 660, iPhone 8gb (Technology is not the solution. It's only a tool to help you achieve it.)

Possible Solution

I use the custom icon's in mapsource and on my Zumo so everything looks the same in/on either.
When I create POI's on mapsource and use my custom icon's, I will save the POI's in the appropriate folder on my pc. In the SAME pc folder I also have my custom icon (bmp) and a custom alert (mp3). The custom bmp and mp3 file have to have the EXACT same name as the POI gpx file. To load the POI's onto the Zumo, I use the POI loader and point it to the pc folder containing the POI's and their associated custom icon's and alert's. The POI loader uses FM (friggin magic) to associate all 3 files and load them onto the Zumo. The POI's display with the custom icon and when an alert is triggered, my custom alert mp3 is played.
