Garmin Nuvi 350 directory limit

This is a possible "advisory" that could cause Nüvi 350 to lock up.
I had my POI files separated into five subdirectories on my computer. No problem loading onto Nüvi 350.
I separated the POI files to seven subdirectories. Immediately after "successfully" loading the files, the 350 hung up at "Loading Maps." Reset, hard reset, reboot, deleting memory had no effect. This resulted in RMA, and I got the replacement 350 today.
Immediately after "successfully" loading the POI files, the same thing happened. The same lock up on two Nüvi 350s can't be a coincidence.
Has anyone else with Nüvi 350 had this problem?
Incidentally, the number of subdirectories doesn't seem to be a problem with the Nüvi 750.

There was a condition (related to the number of bitmaps) that gave this symptom - but it's supposedly fixed...

I just got an e-mail from Garmin support suggesting that I run a WebUpdater. The problem is that the computer does not find the 350.
I'll probably have to call them next week.

Hey all new guy here
9 sub directories in my POI folder on the computer. I've loaded mine on the NUVI , no problem, but erased them and keep all POI and MP3 files on my SD card now.

That's bad news - I wonder if they've re-introduced the problem.

This issue (or at least, one with same symptoms) surfaced last February.
There are other posts on that site related to this issue - the whole Nüvi 3xx/6xx range seems to have been affected at one time or another. The guys who did the initial investigation thought it was related to the number of categories, but Garmin described their fix as being related to the number of bitmaps.
There is a potential cure - which involves loading modified firmware (using the Pre-boot mode, where the device is in Garmin USB GPS mode). Garmin's modified firmware doesn't attempt to load the POI's, but I've seen it done the other way round (where it doesn't load the maps).
I don't have a modified file for the 350 (it needs to be in .RGN format , rather than .GCD). There is a guy who posts on GPSPASSION.COM (user name "neadrenalin") who has modified some for the Nüvi 2xx series. Search for "Service Firmware" for more details.
You would have hoped that Garmin could supply this fix to you.
