Tip of the day

Since my Nuvi's manual was useless I started playing with the different functions and from there comes my tip of the day.

Say you are driving on the Interstate from your home city to a distant city and have the route up in your GPSR and the stomach begins making funny noises telling you to stop for food, since you are not familiar with the area you will probably pull up on the next exit and start looking for a place to eat, the tip I have is to hit [Where to?] again without hitting the [stop button], then go to [Points of Interest] [Food] and either hit [All Food] or choose something from the list; as you drive on the Interstate you will see the restaurants near by start showing up on the list and as you drive they begin to be replaced with new restaurants based on proximity, keep driving until something pops up on the list of your liking.

Let’s hear from others what tips they have to share, tell us yours…

Tip of the Day

Hi flaco,

Like your TOD. I'll use it tomorrow. Thanks.

sounds like a good tip

I'll try it on my next road trip.

Tip Of The Day

Go here and download the complete manual:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/userManual.jsp

Or, at least in the case of the Nuvi 350, you can find it in the Nuvi directory.

tip of the day

it also helps if you put along route before you pick the poi. that way it will only show what is front of you and not behind.

This sounds useful. What

This sounds useful. What does "put along the route" mean?

Yep, I see a future poi

Yep, I see a future poi addict! My manual was useless also. So I did the Garmin manual download-but this site is where I learned almost everything, and keep learning new things all the time. Do some forum searches and faq. There`s a ton of helpful tips just like yours on here!

use "Near"

glennjoann wrote:

After you select Where To, there is an option of "Near" at the bottom of the screen. Selecting "near" gives the option of
"Where I am now"
"A Different City"
"My Current Route"
"My Destination"
This allows you to fine-tune the locale of where it would search. The default is "Where I am now" so it searches for what is closest to you. But you could fine tune your search to accomodate "We'll be in Abilene in about an hour. How about we stop for lunch when we get there?" And you could search for restaurants that were closest to Abilene instead of what was closest to you NOW.

Near Option

Great tip thanks. I hadn't used the "Near" option before and am looking forward to trying it. It is very annoying to see poi's behind me when I conduct searches. Is there any way to permanently change the default from "Where I am now?" Or are the Nuvi's not user configurable like that? I have the Nuvi 760.

Tip of the Day

"without hitting the [stop button], then go to [Points of Interest] [Food] and either hit [All Food] or choose something from the list; as you drive on the Interstate you will see the restaurants near by start showing up on the list and as you drive they begin to be replaced with new restaurants based on proximity"

I cannot wait to try it. Thank you!

I also do that with Cities

flaco wrote:

When I am driving along familiar roads on a trip, I often do the same thing, only I select cities and see what towns are nearby as I am driving along. I discovered a few interseting names of small towns that I plan to go back to visit.

I have informed my wife that I plan to take her to visit Royalty some weekend, then take her to Climax. shock Both are towns near us in North Texas.

Sad but true

As good as the Garmin hardware, software, and support is, its sad that thier documentation is so poor. Its fun for us to discover and share undocumented features, but Garmin could be doing a better job with this.

Great tip

Great tip. I do have a question though. If you don't use the "Where to" feature, will the icons pop up on the map as you are driving? The reason I ask is that if I am driving around just for the fun of it, can I get the map to display offbeat attractions (custom POI file) in the area?

icons on map

Many complaints from users that they don't see the icons or that they have to be zoomed in the map to see them.

The beauty of the tip is that by not hitting the Stop button you will still hear Jill, Jack, Julie, Paulina or whoever you have set up in Language continue to blabber directions as you watch the restaurants or whatever chosen roll by on the list.

Yes, you can do custom routing with a Nuvi

Of course the one major failing of most of the Nuvi line is that you can't load custom routes. It's something I think should be standard on EVERY GPSr. However, using MapSource and Favorites or POIs, you can do a slightly clunky version of custom routing.

I find Mapsource handy for validating routes. It has become my primary planning and POI tool. Its also easier to see routes on a computer screen than on the GPSr. To create a route in MapSource, you have to create waypoints anyway. So if you don't like a route, simply create additional waypoints to force a new route. Give them names that will make it easy for you, like "Stop 1", "Stop 2", etc. After it all looks good, save the waypoints as a .gpx file (not a .gdb, which is the defaut) and load them on the Nuvi as favorites. Then just pull them up and route to them while on your journey. Its not as slick as loading a custom route, but it works well enough.

Custom Routing

I do this all the time on my C530. The only caution I'd offer is not to make the waypoints too close together, since you need some time to "route" to each one.

If your unit came pre-loaded with your map package I believe you can just phone Garmin and they will send you out the disks. I have a 670 and talked with them today. No questions asked obviously have my unit registration address etc. I will wait to see how long it takes.

Thanks

It will show the restaurants near that town and untill you get close enough to the selected town you will have manually arrow down to see the rest of the restaurants. by doing it without "Near" it will be a rolling billboard changing as you drive.

Great Suggestion!

Thanks for the wounderful suggestion. My Nuvi 650 does not automatically show the custom POI Icons on the map. Not knowing what's at the upcoming Interstate Exit has always been a source of frustration. I will use your technique on my next trip.

Reg Tip of the Day

I do the same thing but when I find a place not on the poi i tap the screen icon and save the location and remane the number. Its great.

And if for some reason they want to charge you $15, decline and call back the next day. You'll get a different rep and proably get it for free. I had no trouble. Got it on the first call. The best part is that they give you all of North America. Effectivly, this gives you the maps the 250 has for less money. So if you need Canada at some later point, you can up load portions of it to the 200, though I think having an SD card will help by giving it more space.

Yes, It's Free

I just called Garmin Support (800-800-1020) and will have my MapSource "backup" disks sent as soon as they're back in stock (too many users must have read this post ahead of me grin). He initially wanted to charge $6 for shipping, which I was willing to pay, but he even killed that by the end of our conversation.

Bad news is that they're supposedly only PC-compatible. Since I have an Intel Mac I can boot to Windoze if necessary. He said Garmin is working on being fully Mac-compatible.

Thanks for the tip!

As an additional hint...

Doc_Brown wrote:

... when you pick your waypoints to navigate to them, choose the second one, hit "Go", then after teh route is calculated, go back to "Where to?" and pick the first one, hit "Go" and select it to use as a Via point. Now the GPSr will route you through the first point on the way to the second one. Saves a bit of fiddling around with it. I used this on my 2200 mile trip to SW Florida last week. Worked great. I also discovered the tip that the OP suggested when looking for the next rest stop. Used it for fuel, food, rest, etc, on the 3.5 day journey.

Unfortunately, it didn't warn me that Louisiana has stupid deer.... like the one that ran out of the woods on to the very busy freeway at 3 in afternoon right in front of me..... The '97 Buick Park Avenue I was driving (my father's car) took the blow better than the deer, but I think it's past time now for someone to invent a "deer detector". rolleyes

This is great feature, but

This is great feature, but the limitation is that you see only a list of the let's say restaurants and their proximity to you. You can't see the map.
Has anybody found a way to continue seeing a map and POIs on it? Thanks for your help.

We want and affordable GPSr that we can fit in shirt pocket with a 4"X3" screen and be able to see everything, lets get real even on my 20" wide monitor I have trouble seeing the icons, at a busy intersection they appear as a blob one on top of the other, if you have MapSource you know what I'm talking about. IMO if we had the ability to see the icons on the map in the tiny screens that we have we will neither see the map or the icons it will all be a blur.

Using Near

While on a route I use Near - Current Route and then perhaps food. This gives me a list of places that are ahead on the route and not behind on my 750. If I select one of the locations it can be added as a waypoint to the route.

Used For Attractions

I use the same tip as the OP but not for restuarants. I do it for Attractions. For Instance when I was in San Antonio and had limited time, I selected the attractions near me, and they all popped up on the screen. Then I would drive to the nearest one and then to the next, etc., etc. This way I was able to give myself a driving tour of the town.

POI's Along Route

I have found one problem. With the POI's we add to the Nuvi, I cannot get them to show me only the POI's along my route. It works fine with Garmin incorporated POI's but does not seem to work the same way with my custom POI's. It just shows me all the POI's distance from my location, and not if they are along my route.

Small bug but something that you should be aware of.

Only on the POI list

They display as a list on the POI screen. As you are moving an arrow beside each item points to its location relative to your current position. A handy feature, that should be in a manual!
