3225 vs 4000 (Magellan)

I am looking to purchase a maestro. I am torn between the 3225 and 4000. I can get them both for around the same price. Also, does the 3225 come with 6 million poi's installed or do you have to install them yourself??

3225 vs 4000

Features and specs. can be found fairly easily at:
http://www.magellangps.com

The 3225 has more features, including the 6M POIs.
The 4000 has a larger screen.

If your eyes are good, the 32xx series is probably a better value. Mine aren't so I got the larger screen.

Are the 6 million poi's already in the gps system or do I have to download them from software? 3225 not on web site yet i looked.

If there are 6 million poi's on this gps system, why does it say that there are only 1.3 million on the box. i looked at one yesterday and it didn't say anywhere that there were 6 million. I contacted magellan to no avail???

Yes, but it IS a 3220 with some slight extra feature. Maybe somebody here knows the difference. I don't but that's probably available on a web site of a company that actually sells them..

Anything listed on the spec. sheet is pre-loaded/built-in.......and except for adding your own "custom" POIs, there is no "standard" way to change any of that, unless and until Magellan issues an update.

Actually, I am ASSUMING that it all is pre-loaded because my 4000 was. That's a dangerous thing to do when dealing with Magellan. The only thing consistant across their model line is.........nothing!!

I agree with you there. They were NO help. They told me there are 6 million pre loaded and I can't find that anywhere not even on the box!!! It is very frustrating.

That is the norm...

If you look at the magellan part of this website you will see that customer support is one of their weak points.

I can't speak from experience, but I hear that Magellan's Custome Service is pretty bad.

I have a Garmin and have had a geat experience with their Customer Service Dept. They have always helped me with questions I have had.

Not trying to sell you a Garmin, but thought I would send this info to you. hahaha

Well thank you, lol. my

Well thank you, lol. my friend actually has a garmin also, i may just take a look!!

Well I can speak from experience

And let me assure you that to use the term "customer Service" and "Magellan" in the same sentence is..... I can't even begin to find a word.

They are USELESS and I mean USELESS when it comes to customer service. The make promises to call you back in 24-48 hours and never do. (Unless they meant any 24 hours of their choosing and I am still waiting)

They don't listen to the customer, they go about doing their "script" like the useless robots that they are.

It's really too bad because I really did like the interface on the Magellan (I am quickly getting used to Garmin's interface now).

Enough ranting, suffice to say that customer support is not one of their strong points.

GOOD LUCK if you need REAL help from them

POI download them from software

You have to download the 6 million poi's and replace the one in the 3225.

3225, 6M POI

dtlotus wrote:

Are you SURE about that? Is it that much different from the 3220 ?? The 3220 comes WITH the 6M POI.

This discussion just didn't seem right to me somehow so I did some searching and now I understand why the OP is confused.

I'm confused too......more so than usual! mrgreen

It appears that there is more than one 3225 and they seem to only be available at a few "select" places.....like Costco and Radio Shack.

I don't know if the Costco one is different from the RS one, is different from.........
OR
If there is just a new model and an old model but the bottom line is: What you see is what you get. Read the box and don't ASSume that it has a feature not listed there.

Looks like some have 1.4M POIs and some have 6M POIs and both are labeled 3225.

Good luck. I think you're gonna need it.

3225 has TTS

ka1167 wrote:

4000 and 3220 do not have text-to-speech, but 3225 has. 3225 is one of the cheapest gps that has TTS. And with 6m POI you can later add, it is a real bargain.

decided to go Garmin

I have decided after much consideration to go with the garmin 200w. I talked to the customer service people at garmin and low and behold they spoke english. What a surprise. This garmin has both the larger screen and the 6million poi's that you don't have to download!!! Both of which i love. O hope i am not disappointed!!

Very easy Melissa just grab

Very easy Melissa just grab the 6 million POI file from the WEB search in bittorent and then download the file to you pc. attached the 3225 to your pc via usb cable just make sure to backup all the files from the 3225 to your pc. Then open the folder APPS i think there is a file there something like 48state_POI.POI just replace that file with the 6 million poi file. this file have the same name but the bytes on the 6 million is bigger. I got 3225 from Costco as well. I first evaluaed Garmin but this little 3225 have more features than garmin which is more expensive. The 3225 have TTS, Trip planner for multiple route, POI icon are in the screen, user friendly interface and more accurate routing.

3225

Did you read my previous post at all??
Have you actually done any web searches for the 3225??

If you want a 3225 with 6M POIs, find a retailer that sells the variation that has it already loaded.
I believe Radio Shack is one place that has it.
IIRC, the Costco version does not.

There IS some danger in loading the file yourself.

P.S. If you are going to get a Garmin, why do you still care about the 3225 ??

You work for Garmin......or Costco.....or just have an axe to grind with Magellan ????

He probably just didn't look up and realize that it was in a Magellan thread. I wouldn't assume that there was malicious intent.

3225

The 3225 is currently only sold at Costco stores. It has 1.3 Million POI's, but it can be upgraded to 6 Million. Go Anandtech for instructions. The 3225 has text-to-voice and the 4000 does not.

3225 at BJ's Wholesale Club

The 3225 only comes with a little over a million POIs at purchase.. the 6mil POI update needs to be installed (very easy) by downloading the file via sharing networks or otherwise. After install, the POI search is a little slower, but worth it due to a database that is nearly 6 times larger than factory settings.

Your choice between the two models really depend whether screen size or text-to-speech is more important to you.
