How Does Ticket Camera Alert Function?

Well, I still don't have a strong enough reason to persuade me to even try using the database on this site to configure a GPS Navi to alert me when approaching speed and red light cameras.
This, despite spending several hour searching this site for detailed information.
Here is something I found when reading the faq section on the Garmin gps devices.

Alert Implementations

The Speed and Proximity alerts detailed above, are all of the type “Along Road”. They are only triggered when you are at the specified distance (and travelling at the specified speed) on the road that contains them. When in Routing mode, the concept of the ‘road that contains them’, is extended to consider the whole route as one road.

But if your calculated route (or your actual journey) does not take you past the POI, then the alert will not trigger

Can someone explain this? It is the reason why I am requesting a detailed step by step description of how the alerts happen while driving. A demo would be great. But at the very least I need to hear, first hand, step by step from the moment the ignition is turned on. I will not go to the expense and trouble of using the database on this site if the gps unit has to be operating in a 'calculated route' mode. It must be able to alert me while simply tracking my position on the map.
Thanks for taking the time to consider this request.

dryheat3... The best demo is, try it yourself, you will never go back... It's a great tool....

Garmin Alerts

I have seen exceptions to the Garmin explanation of being on the "road that contains them".
Alerts have triggered in a shopping mall within the detection distance of a nearby Interstate Roadside Rest.
Alerts have triggered for a redlight camera located on a street running perpindicular and under a freeway I was traveling. I was within the alert distance.
It does sometimes happen.

You don't have to be on a calculated route. That's not what it says. It says that the alerts are calculated "along a road" and that the concept of "along a road" can be extended to consider the whole route as a road.

In general, you must be traveling on a road on which the POI is located, traveling in the direction of the POI location, and within the alert distance for the alert to sound. Also, the POI location must be on or very near the road. If the coordinates for the location place it too far from the road, the alert may not sound.

Ok, this information

Ok, this information definitely helps. Thanks for clarifying that bit about the 'Calculated Route'.

Exceptions?

"Alerts have triggered for a redlight camera located on a street running perpindicular and under a freeway I was traveling. I was within the alert distance."

While traveling this same freeway in route mode I did not trigger the alert??

Does this work with the Garmin c340?
