Newbie Question - Nuvi

Hi everyone,

First off, I'd like to say hello - new GPS user after getting on during the Boxing Week sales here in Canada. I bought the Nuvi 250W, which I really do like.

However, I'm curious as to the age of the maps I have. I'm not sure how often City Navigator NT gets updated, but it doesn't have some new (and major) highways that opened up in October this year in my city.

Will Garmin upgrade me for free when these updates become available?

.

Garmin releases the map updates once per year. This year's update was released in May 2007.

You can check the version of maps you have on your unit by going to Wrench/Settings > Map > Map Info

The most current version is v2008.

The previous version was v8.

If you just bought your unit and have the previous maps, you should probably be able to get the updated maps by calling Garmin. (Not 100% sure about how it works for Canada, but I don't recall anyone having a problem.)

Since the road you are referring to opened after the map update was released, it makes sense that it was is not included in this release.

Garmin has a map viewer on their website where you can view the maps to see if the changes in which you are interested are included.

When then next update is released, you will have to pay for it if you want/need the update.

Kind of harsh!

Cool. That is the version that came with my unit.

Yes, I did that and also notified NavTeq on their site - although I'm sure I'm not the first...

That's kind of harsh - considering that most software comes with a one year subscription, you would think they could do a "one more upgrade" thing.

Thanks for the information!

I would add...

I would add that you shouldn't expect a road that opened in October 2007 to show on the next update. It usually takes at least a year to get the new data compiled and published, so don't be surprised if that road is still missing. This is not anything specific to Garmin, but is the same for most mapping entities.

...and just to add to this, if you want to assure yourself that Navteq and Garmin are aware of the new roads, go to this page and fill the form out.

Cost?

What is the average cost for getting the yearly map update?

Cost-$70

If you are not entitled to a free update, Garmin is charging $70 for the map update.

Thank you!

Thanks for all the information folks. I know Navteq has the first leg that opened October/November 2006 in their system, but it's not in the Garmin. I understand Navteq updates 4 times per year but Garmin once per year - is that right?

map updates

Garmin seems to update annually and the current version is 2008. They are very good at giving free updates if you just bought and have an older map

updates

I have a garmin "map update 2008-city navigator north america NT" dvd cd that my wife bought for her nuvi by mistake a few months ago. Is this the latest version you guys are talking about? I recently got a nuvi 750, and the highest "compatible" units listed on the cd are the 680's.

I just bought my 250w up here in Canada via the Boxing Day Sales and price matching (teehee) and in my garmin it gives me the following, do you have it also:

1.redeem additional unlock coupon
2. unlock additional garmin unit

Does that mean me/us are entitled to free updates? Also, did you have to install anything on your unit, or just plug and play?
