If you are getting a big fat tax refund you are doing something wrong. You need to change your withholding to a smaller amount and get the money in your pay check. Remember the government does not give you interest on your money that they are holding for you, keep it yourself. The money is better in your bank then the in the hands of the government.

Before the end of this year why not look at being more charitable? This is the last day to give assets away and receive your tax break for the calendar year. And I think if my memory serves me correctly you get taxed on the "big fat tax return" the following year as income.
You do not get taxed on a refund unless the IRS paid interest on it which they only do if it is not sent within something like 60 days after April 15 or when you filed whichever is later. It is your money you overpaid with after tax funds.
