POI loader for Garmiin

When updating my POI files from my POI folder, does it add the files in only once or does it keep adding the files each time? Should I delete the files once I put them on my GPS? Will they take up a lot of space on my GPS?

Sorry there's so many questions!

The POI loader overwrites

The POI loader overwrites your old POIs already stored in your unit. Whenever you need to add a new POI file, you will need to upload all other POI files. So, I recommend to keep copies on your computer for all the POI files that you have. Because, when you update a POI you will need to upload the old ones as well. I do not know for sure about the space, but I guess it will take the same space as in your computer, won't it?!

.

POI files don't take up very much space.

I currently have about 23,000 location loaded, and the poi file is about 3.7MB.

I have over 200,000 POI's loaded on my GPS. I have a 680. Don't know what model you have. After connecting it to my PC via a USB cable, I saw files with manuals in it, voices, vehicles that I wouldn't use. I just moved them to my PC which freed up much space. I do not put my POI's on the SD card. I use it for music and pictures.

When you download a POI file to your computer, you will need to save it to a directory. Then when you use the POI loader, you go to that directory. It does not have to be in the Garmin folder. I keep mine in My Documents

Create a folder called POI on your C drive. Save all the POI files that you download in C:\POI. When you run POI Loader just point to the folder.

Yes, you need to create the folder on your computer and place the Custom POI files you have downloaded or created in that folder. Then when you run POI Loader, select the folder you created.

You can have subfolders under your main folder, if you want. The folders will create categories. You can't have more than one level of subfolder. The files themselves will create the subcategory.

For example, it might look like this.

> My POI (Main folder)
>> IHOP (subfolder)
... IHOP.csv
... IHOP.bmp
>> National Parks (subfolder)
... National Parks.gpx
... National Monuments.gpx
... National Recreation areas.gpx
... National Parks.bmp
... National Monuments.bmp
etc.

In this example, IHOP and National Parks show up as categories and then under National Parks, the subcategories of National Parks, National Monuments, and National Recreation Areas show up.

Here are some screenshots of what it would look like.

This is a shot of the folder and files on my computer.

This is how the first level shows up on my Zumo.

When I select the National Parks category, this is what I get.

poi loader

I have a spare gps a c320 I have found that it can only store about 1.4 meg in poi's if you put icon in with your poi's you do not have much room.

--

Time to make room

Start deleting stuff you will never need, sample mp3, sample pictures, languages and text that are of no interest to you, also clean up the Help folder etc.
One Icon per category goes a long way and they are very small.

Unfortunately, the SP3xx series doesn't show up as a USB Mass Storage Device, so there's no way to access the voice and text files to delete them.

I have a nuvi 350. I ran the POI loader, but got an error message saying that I did not have a card installed...I don't have a card. Can I load new POI's without a card?

When you attach your nuvi to your PC, open My Computer and you should see a nuvi drive and a 2nd drive for the nuvi SD slot. Make a note of the drive letter for the nuvi (Garmin) drive, and select that for the POI Loader.
You don't need the SD card to load POI directly to the unit.

Will I lose the few POI's I have in my "favorites" list?

Thanks.

I think POI are not related

I think POI are not related to Favorites. Only POIs are affected by POI loading

A slight correction

As galaxtel stated , Favorites will not be affected by loading Custom POIs to your GPSr with the POI Loader. One slight correction is that your "Custom POIs" already installed will be affected and must be reloaded along with any new ones.
The built-in POIs that came with the mapping software are not altered!

POI are not related to Favorites

Galaxtel is right.

You can copy/delete/add favorites by using direct access to/from GPS and Mapsource.
POI needs to be organized as "Mama" recommended and downloaded by POI LOADER.

not exactly sure when i download POIs

From Garmin support.

Currently, the primary use of
the SD slot is for mapping and to provide future expansion since the
mapping does get larger every year as more details as put into the unit.
Please let me know if there is anything else I may assist you with.

When you download Custom POI files from this site, you should save them to a folder on your computer not on the unit itself.

You need to use POI Loader to load the Custom POIs to your GPS unit.

The 300 will not read Custom POIs from the SD card. You will need to connect the GPS unit to your computer with a USB cable. Then when you run POI Loader, you must load the Custom POIs directly to the unit.
