Help requested with Custom POI files

I received a Nuvi260 for Christmas. I am new to GPS so please bear with me. I figured out most of the features on the unit, but the Custom POI lists are giving me trouble.
When I access the Nuvi under /my computer/ L drive displays Garmin GPS, M drives shows the memory card.
The memory card lists all POI's downloaded from this site. However, I don't know how to access them on the unit. /Q/ Do I have to be in the area of the listed attraction before it is displayed/Q/
/Q/ Should the lists be displayed under POI/Q/
Any help will be appreciated.
