Garmin c530

Hey everyone,

After a long drawn out research project to find the GPS for me I decided on the Garmin c530. Other notable mentions go to the Garmin c330, c340, c550 and others. The c530 was best for my budget - bought it at The Source for $429.00 Canadian (on sale) - my wife is already amazed at what it can do. She hates driving in unknown territory and I have to give her directions all the time. So now she can take this with her and never get lost....I hope!

I haven't seen too many discussions on the c530 but I hope there are other users out there?

C530

I have one as well. I have noticed not to many comments on the c530. I am still trying to learn how to add POI's and once they are on there to get them to alert.

Love my c530

I, too, have a c530. It was a Christmas present from my wife and son. I am actually on my 2nd unit. The first one had problems with corrupt software. I returned and received another and have had no problems with it.

I use POI Loader to put custom POI's on an SD card which I use in my unit. I use the "Express" setting when I load them, so I don't worry too much about setting alerts for all of them. With POI Loader you can use the "Manual" setting to set alerts for the custom POI's. Other, more knowledgeable people on this site have written more about this. Do a search to find out more.

I am very pleased with my c530. I did extensive research and feel that the c530 met all of my criteria. I got it for $376 with free shipping through PC Nation.

C530 Alerts

How many feet are you setting your alerts at??? I am driving by schools and the alerts arent going off. I paid 358 for mine. Sears had it for $599 price matched it to Wal Marts 398. Got 10% of the difference plus everything in the store was 10% off. That my friends is a touchdown!!!

Charging through USB port

"The Boys" got one for my parents for Xmas, also at The Source, and so far they love it.

One thing they would like to to do is charge it inside the house instead of using the 12v charger in the car. I know there is an AC adapter available but can anyone tell me whether the 530 will charge off the mini-usb port? I know that some units do but I checked the documentation and it's not mentioned.

Thanks!

C530 Alerts

Suggestion re alerts - I had the same problem with my C530 and finally decided to let it load the POI files from the SD card into the unit's memory, "in case the SD card is removed" or whatever it says as part of that prompt. And the alerts work all of a sudden. I was thinking about buying a larger card, now using a 16 MB one that came in a camera and wasn't nearly large enough for that purpose - but a 16 MB card holds an awful lot of POI's, and I have about 20 MB free in the unit's memory after I deleted some of the foreign language files I will never use. So if that's where the alerts work I'll just live with that! My most recent test was a place where I had an alert set for 10000 ft and it alerted me at well over a mile, but I didn't have it set up to let me know how far.

Had a 530, upgraded to a 550, got more for the money - but both are fine - wife LOVES her 330 too. Except for the lack of altitude, no lat/longs, no direct legs, no real routes and no NMEA $trings, it's still among the more impressive unites of the 17 I've owned since '94...

I revamped the alerts in my 550 at about double and it all works great now--

Charging through USB port

Thanks,

I had plugged the usb in but it didn't give any indication that it was charging the way it does on the 12v. I will try it again the next time I visit.
