waypoints on a garmin nuvi 200

My understanding is I can not use mapsource or any other PC based system to plan a route or set waypoints. That is a tradeoff of buying the low priced unit and saving $100.

I have a trip comming up and here is what I am doing, if there is a better way, someone please tell me what it is. I am using PC based software to plot my route (nuvi does not pick the best route). I am picking way points and stops to force the garmin to plot the route I want (it takes 3 in this case). I am saving them to a POI file named TRIP and naming the POIs waypoint1, waypoint2, etc...

I will then have nuvi plot my route to the destination and add the first via point. When I pass the first vispoint, I'll add the second and etc... Do it in reverse for the trip back.

One feature I miss from my Tomtom Nav5 is the ability to review the route and tell Tomtom to calculate a new route if I Don't like the one it picked. I don't know how to force Garmin nuvi 200 to recalculate a route other than by missing a turn.

You can use MapSource

Your method is correct though. Thats what I'm doing, ploting out routes with MapSource and saving the waypoints as favorites. Those can be converted to POIs or left as Waypoints and uploaded to the Nuvi. You can also plan and save the routes, you just can't upload them to the Nuvi. The other advantage to MapSource is that it uses the same routing engine as the Nuvi, so you can tell what its going to do in advance, and select way points to force a route the way you want it. Most people seem to feel that MapSource is a waste, but if you're a map junkie, it's a nice enhancement to the Nuvi.
