First one I bought was this model 'cause I wanted something to record my hikes/walks in the woods. I did some research on the Internet in the Spring '08 and this model was highly recommended at the time plus I found a great price searching Amazon.com.

I like to "average" when I mark a waypoint. I typically watch the estimated accuracy over fifty measurements (minimum). It usually trends downward if the satellite fix is good and steady. If you watch the lon/lat reading on the screen while it averages you can see that it only varies by thousandths of a degree in most cases while the accuracy estimate in feet improves by five-ten.

I usually name the new waypoint in some shorthand way on the screen before saving it. You dont' really need to do that if you're downloading tracks/waypoints to Mapsource for viewing. You'll will see where you were and remember what it was on the map. It easier to rename the waypoint and/or track with something more descriptive/memorable (meaning longer) using the PC keyboard when you get to Mapsource.

I also bought Garmin's Topo 2008 maps for North America. They're great! I only load certain blocks near my homebase from those onto the gps SD card using Mapsource just to conserve memory. Probably could put a lot more on there since I added a 2gb card right after I bought the unit (memory is so cheap these days).

And I like to transfer everything to GoogleEarth (via Mapsource tools) now and then to see my hikes on their satellite maps.

Have fun!!
