Help me decide

Normally I won't post a question like this on the net, but rely on my own research, but I am not sure here so I will ask advice.

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 650 for $300, but now have the chance to buy a Nuvi 680 for $480.

I am less than interested in the FM transmitter and bluetooth, but am interestd in the traffic info. I am not a traveling salesman and to be honest even if the freeway is messed up, there is just about one way to get to work so the traffic info would only be helpful a handful of times / year when we are going through Los Angeles to get out of or back into town.

I was initially excited about getting the Nuvi for $300, happy to get in and out on the cheap, now I am getting sucked into the desire for the traffic. However, considering the extra cost of the unit and the cost of a long term subscription, I have easily doubled the cost of ownership of the GPS... For a highly desireable feature, but a feature I will seldom use...

It's not like the kids wont get new clothes or anything like that, but I am a practical guy so doubling the cost for the realtime traffic doesn't sit well, but I do want it...

Last night, I was 100% ready to make the swap, but this morning, I am thinking no. Any advice? Anyone use the MSN traffic data in Los Angeles? Love it? Not love it?

Thanks in advance.

Paul

Will try it out today.

I will be driving to L.A today with the MSN Direct and find out. I had great luck with the 660 TMC traffic though.

NUVI 650 & 680 Traffic

As far as I know... when it comes to the Traffic capabilities, they can both receive FM traffic.

Neither of them is "XM-Traffic" capably.

But it does seem like the 680 can do the MSN stuff where the 650 can't.

I don't know anything at all about what you can get with the MSN capabilities.

Is it worth the extra money ?

If you're like me though... you want the latest and greatest. I can sympathize with your agony over the decision.

nuvi 650

i was the same way when i looked .tried to read as much as possible about the units and what they did ,but what was the decieding factor for me was amazons 310 shipped for the 650. ive only had it for a few days but so far other than my own stupidity typing town names ill say im overly estatic with the 650 .its meet and exceeded my expectation levels so far . i even have a tank for a vehicle icon now .price, value nuvi 650.

I want a built in

I want a built in transmitter, both the 650 and the 680 have that, right? $180 is a lot to pay for just a traffic ability feature, in my opinion. Rather get a cb for TRUE real time traffic update.

Going to keep the 650

After reading this thread

I am going to keep the 650 as I am certain in a year or two there will be a "new" service from Garmin that is likely to surpass what is coming from MSN. In any case, I am not likely to use the traffic feature that often, but it sure is cool, isn't it?

Thanks for the comments.

It sounds cool in theory,

It sounds cool in theory, but the coverage is limited. And, many people that live smack dab in the middle of coverage areas have complained about reception, lack of data, timeliness of data, etc. They need to get the bugs worked out of any information update system before they'll get my subscription money.

680 Traffic Alerting

I have had my 680 since they came out. I drive into Phoenix AZ everyday and the traffic alerting has been great. I once didn't do what it said, and I sat there for 20 minutes, not moving. On all the other times, it has taken me off a main freeway, driven me down some roads to other freeways and gotten me to work much quicker. I couldn't live without it. However, the traffic alerting is only in major cities, not small ones.

I would go with the 660 (cheaper & already having the TMC service) instead of 680, Paul... and keep the 650 as a spare idea

Traffic Services

We just bought our parents a Navigon 5100 that I am "testing" befor we give it to them.

It came with a lifetime subscription of FM traffic.

I also have a Garmin 2730 and pay for the XM-NavTraffic.

In short... the XM NavTraffic stinks. But It like night and day with the FM traffic on the Navigon.

The FM traffic is SO MUCH BETTER.

I know a lot of it has to do with the way the software handle the reporting and display, but the FM is most certainly more up to date than the XM Traffic reporting.

So I wish my 2730 had the capability of getting the FM traffic.

So if you;re trying to decide on a unit, I'd look for one that has the ability to hook up to several Traffic sources and you can decide which one you like.

Tim

you will be extremely

you will be extremely pleased with the LG LN740.

Traffic works extremely well on this unit.
