Received Map Update 2008

Just follow the directions...I have installed it on 2 330s and my Etrex without a problem on any one of them. If you have not installed the
USB drivers, You may need to do that first..I am pretty sure they are on the new maps disk. You also didnt say if it is Your 660 that you are putting it on...I would have thought that came with 2008 on it..But if you have any problems just repost and I am sure we can get you fixed up....

Did you purchase 2 copies or licenses for the C330's just wondering?

You might check installed programs and remove the outdated map (if any) from a previous installation if no longer needed.

I was one of the Lucky ones that got the Free Upgrade with my C330;s and so did my Brother..I also paid a lot more than they are going for now...But I had no troubles with the Upgrade disks. I was surprised that even with a new Unlock code You can't reuse an Upgrade Disk..the Disk asks you to have the Unit hooked to the PC with the USB cable..and Checks the Unit over the Net and compares to the disk..and will not work with the wrong unit/disk. I think It might work with Mapinstall if you have a code...But it was just as easy to have new disks for each one..
Now my Etrex didnt use the NT version of the maps..so I needed another disk for that.

these installed successfully, but there is a program on the disc called Mapinstall. Is it necessary to install particular cities, or did they install with the 2008 installation? If the cities updated, what is the MapInstall actually for?

I don't remember the mapinstall that you speak of. But when you upgraded to 2008, that should have been the complete us, canada maps. Cities and all.

it put an Icon on my desktop that says "MapInstall". It has cities, towns, large and small all over the U.S.. I can't figure out what it's for. Guess I'll call Garmin.

You got that when you upgrade to the 2008 maps?????? I don't remember that happening to me. I am not sure what that is for, can't wait for an answer.

just got the Map Update 2008 in the mail today. It took almost 2 hours to install. I looked in the tools and it shows the 2008 installed.

TWO HOURS!!!!!!!! It took mine only about 45 minutes, maybe it is dfferent with different models. It can't be the pc, cause I have a 750MHz proc with only 512 of SDRam

That program is useful for those of us with limited memory, i.e. c530. Using Mapinstall I was able to add the Canadian provinces, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, etc. to my SD card to enable full use of all of the maps.

I guess when I added some on the cities, and towns around me I just overwrote them.....no problem. Just out of curiosity, if I had another model Garmin (which I don't) that took a SD card, could I put the cities from the MapInstall on that card and use it in another Garmin?

I just got the Garmin nuvi 660 2 months ago. How do i know if i have 2008 maps on there. i think i only have North america nt or something like that

Wrench/Settings > Map > Map Info

It should read either

City Navigator NT v8

or

City Navigator 2008

2008 is newer then NT v8, just to clarify.

Mine has City Navigator North America NT 2008. Is that the newer one or is the other one V* newer?

City Navigator North America NT 2008 is the latest Garmin map.

Sorry if this is in the wrong topic, but I just got my Garmin C330 a couple of days ago, and it has the City Navigator North America NT V8 loaded.

Do I qualify for the free upgrade to NT 2008, or would I have to purchase it?

My C330 is over a year old. I complained to Garmin that there were many inaccuracies, and they said they would send me the 2008 version. I haven't received it yet.
You should send them an email, and explain that you just got the unit, but the map is outdated.
They wrote to me that you have to choose between the U.S. and the Canadian maps, as the internal memory won't take both at once. But, there is a post on this site that describes loading one map into the internal memory, and the other on a SD card. That way you have both maps available. (Both maps should be on the upgrade disc).

Since both maps will no longer fit in the internal memory, I figure that each map must hold more detail than the previous one.

Hi, Can you install all the new maps on the SD card? I wonder if you could. This way u can still leave the older maps that came with the c530 on it and if need be switch back and forth. Hmmmm...I wonder if this can be done. Has anyone attempted this? Thanks!

I don't see why it wouldn't work as Garmin does sell these maps on SD card.

Well, I emailed Garmin, telling them I just bought my c330, but the maps were outdated and that I was requesting a free upgrade. The response is as follows:

A map update is available (2008 City Navigator NT). The regions you can load to your device are the lower 48 states or Canada, Alaska, and the states bordering Canada. It is possible to switch back and forth between the two regions. I emailed them back, politely voicing my frustration on the matter and about inaccuracies on a recent trip to Denver, CO. I haven't heard anything back.

Looks like I may be stuck with what I have.

Return your item to Garmin directly for that reason and they will send you a 550 for a little extra cost.

You will get the 2008 maps already inside.

I wonder why Garmin tells you that the 2008 maps won't fit into memory instead of "to fit all the maps into memory you need to add an SD card and install part to internal memory and the rest to the SD card." As I said in another post, I think their policy is to try to discourage you from demanding the update that you are entitled to. I received my DVD this week and have the US and Canada maps installed. (Thanks to all who explained how.) All it took was an additional 128mb SD card.

By the way, does anyone know if using that small a card is limiting my POI's. I'm still playing with it and don't know for sure how many will fit.

The c330 wont read poi's from the sd card they must be on the internal memory. The Canada maps takeup much less space so I would put them on the internal memory and the US maps on the sd card that way you will have more room for custom poi's. Of course you will need at least a 1 gb sd card to set it up this way

Thanks Steve, I was thinking along that line but I had an extra 128 card that wasn't being used so that is what I started with. I need to remember to get another 1 gb card or maybe just "borrow" it from the camera. That way my wife will remember to get one.
