It's "DRIVE" not "DOCTOR".. sheesh...

Interesting, I just routed to both a St and a Dr in both American English and Australian English and she pronounced both correctly. Perhaps you need to look for an update to your voices?

Mine's inconsistent with Dr. and the Doctor thing. Sometimes my 660 gets it right. It does say "sint" for St. Garmin can easily fix this with a logic upgrade. Say, if St. and Dr. are at the end of the name, they're ALWAYS pronounced Street and Drive. And, St. or Dr. at the beginning of the name generally means Saint or Doctor.

Does anyone elses Nuvi write the shortform for Highway - HwY, with a capital "Y"? When the Nuvi reads this it is nothing short of annoying. It speaks each letter, as in "Take ramp right onto Four Hundred and Twenty-Seven H...W...Y. Grrr.

In GrandRapids, at least, on these particular streets, it says "DR" with no "." after them. So the streets that I would commonly hear were: "Whitburn DR SE" "Wycliffe DR SE" "30th ST SE", etc.

Maybe since these streets have "SE" in them, and it sees a "DR" in front of "SE", it may assume that it's "Doctor SE"? I don't know, but it's kinda wierd..

At least that's my guess...

Once in Des Moines, I was routed onto what the text said was "George M Mills Civic Parkway"....what came out of the TTS engine was "George the 1000th Mills Civic Parkway"....I lmao over that one.

And...all the time I get told to take a "branch" instead of "business route"...the abbreviation is 'Br'.

Thats wild I live just down the highway a bit in Holland. I have the nuvi 200 and so far it pronouces(even though I can't spell) everything right. I just got the new update so maybe that will fix it.

Yeah, mine is all updated.

It came with the latest map version, and I've run the updater to ensure I had the latest software.

I believe when there's a period after the abbreviation, that's when it changes from Drive to Doctor and Street to Saint. There are probably others like that. Garmin's just following standard pronunciation protocol. It gets goofy when the municipalities do not use the appropriate abbreviations.

The streetnames don't have a period after the abbreviation. They just say, "DR" - not "DR.".

My new C340 also makes that same mistakes for St. and Saint. Also I live near 15th Side Road. On the map it is spelled 15th SD RD which turns into SDRD with the voice saying each letter. Annoying but comical.

I have the Nuvi 350 and it pretty much gets these appreviations pronounced right almost all the time; street, road and drive. Even have a couple roads in the area that are "St. This" and "St. That" and it gets them right as Saint This & Saint That. I've hardly ever gotten a Doctor. I wonder if the case makes a difference, like Dr vs DR.

How did you get a Nuvi 200 that speaks the street names?? My Nuvi 200, with all the current updates, does not say the street names, etc... Just "in 400 feet, turn right", etc.... Am I missing a setting someplace??

The Doctors are rich enough to have any Drive they want! so we have to live with that...

Mine does it "wrong" (St; says Saint not Street Dr says Doctor not Drive) for all but the American Voice. My database here in Albuquerque doesn't use a period for Dr. or St. so no way to test the difference. Hey on the positive side Dr Martin Luther Highway is correct for that lovely Australian voice. so I use the American Voice to get it right for Street and Drive

I have a couple "funny" street names to listen to how about:
St Clair St NE
St Croix Dr NW
St Mary's Dr

Sorry all. My nuvi doesn't say the street names but what it does say it pronounces right. I was just trying to get into the conversation. But I do have a nuvi 200.

I find that odd because in many cities there are numbered streets and lettered streets so having an "M Street" would be pronounced "One thousand street?"

Of course if it is M by itself perhaps it says it correctly, or "NW M St"

On my Mio there is a text file listing conversations. 'rd' equals 'Road' and so on.

Yesterday I was traveling and was getting off the interstate, gave me the exit number fine, but didn't pronounce the road name instead giving me the route number of the road. (a little bit confusing because the sign says the road name the largest)

However the street name was "Atlantic" and the route was "806" which from an electronic voice in a noisy car sounded very similar... well enough for me to say, "How did she pronounce that name?" before realizing she was pronouncing the route number.

There is a VA Hospital that I visit and my 760 tells me that the "Virginia hospital" is on my left.

Yeah, I often go places and I name it CO (for central office) but it always says colorado. So I have to type it in as C O

It would have never occurred to me to try different voices. Makes sense of course, each "language" or locale would have some differences in pronunciations and abbreviations.

I can see how people might be annoyed by this, but it's always just sort of a quirky amusement.

"Lincoln Dr E" becomes (in a sexy australian female voice...) 'Lincoln Doctor East'

"R.D. Fleming Br[idge]" becomes "R.D. Fleming Branch"

I have to use Australian, because I live on 'Chislett' street, which with the British female, becomes 'chislay' Karen gets it right though.

My C340 likes to refer to Wisconsin highways (designated as "WI") as Wee.

I have experienced the 'Wee' on several occasions...I look at these 'malapropisms' as humorous quirks and enjoy them...perhaps I'm a bit odd that way...and I like it.

My 660 says "Western Australia" for Washington State "WA-XX" highways. Makes sense as it's the Australian Karen voice. Still, I use American English so you'd think she'd get it right.

Around my parts we have Sunrise Highway which had been renamed the POW/MIA Memorial Highway.

Instead of the Garmin saying P-O-W M-I-A Memorial highway, it says, "powmia"! I guess that if some periods were included between the letters, it might read correctly.

i named a favorite place "Bender Dr Home"

which happens to be my house.

so when we pull up to the house it always says "arriving at Bender doctor home".

does it with evey voice and that is exactly the way i spelled it.
no capital r and no period after the r

always provides a chuckle for us.

I haven't been here in awhile, but I logged on to see what the solution might be. My Nuvi 350 USED to say Drive, but suddenly it just started saying Doctor instead.
I just did the update to 5.2 and the voice updates to see if that changes anything.

Somewhat warm day so it was time to run up to Fullers Car Wash for an oil change and a car wash. Nuvi said I was arriving at "Fullers Car Washington, on right"....
