is there a way to put the map north america nt 2008 on my pc. just in case i need to upload it to my gps device in the future

Well, you are sorta asking

Well, you are sorta asking two different things. First of all, you can copy all the files on the nuvi and keep them on the pc for safe keeping and if you need to restore them, you can.

Also, you can get a copy of Mapsource from garmin (sometimes they will give it to you free, but that is outside of the scope of my reply) which will give you the ability to see maps and manage favorites.

Mapsource

Like asianfire said, call up Garmin and tell them you purchased a 680 and ask them to send you the latest mapsource. I did it and got it for free. Load it up on your PC. You can plan routes but I use it for getting coordinates for making POI's for this site.

Unfortunately, I don't

Unfortunately, I don't believe that you can plan routes and transfer them to the GPSr, that is due to the fact that you have a 6xx series and you need a 7xx or higher. but you can transfer your waypoints (favorites) to the GPSr.
