Adding and then using new POI's

I am so exited. I have just purchased my first GPS a Garmin nuvi 200. So I am also excited to find sites like this to help me learn how to use it most efficiently.

So I have started downloading new POI files and am wondering now how to I find them in the unit after usint POI loader to upload them to the nuvi. for instance i downloaded a seven eleven convenience store POI and don't know how to make the nuvi tell me where they are at. I tried doing a poi search by typing "711" (no results) and also by typing "seven eleven" (only three results none of which were actually a 7-11 convenience store) and i know there is at least 2 with in 20 miles of me.

Can anyone help me on making it easier to find the POI's I have entered from downloaded files.

Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure if the 200

I'm not sure if the 200 series menus are the same as the 600 series, but I suspect they are at least similar. To find custom POIs on the 650, you select "Where to?" and then "Extras". From there, the only selection is "Custom POIs". It will then give the lists that you have imported. Hope this helps.

thank you so much for your

thank you so much for your quick reply. your advice did help and I also found out that each time I want to add new POI's I have to add all of the previous ones again too and add them all at once because the POI loader creates a new custom poi file each time i add new poi's and only keeps what is add at the curent upload.

Example i had donloaded several POI files (walmarts, 7-11 stores, gas stations) and uploaded them. then I downloaded a POI of covered bridges in the US and decided to upload it also to add to the other POI's I had downloaded. so I just added the Covered Bridge POI for upload and it erased my old custom POI file on the nuvi and created a new one with only the covered bridges. So when I found it did this I had to go back to POI loader and put all of the POI's I wanted to keep in one folder and add them all over again.

It isn't really a big hassel because it does it rather quickly each time i want new poi's but it would have saved some headache if there had been a note about that little quirk with the POI loader program.

And in the future if there are any software updates it would be nice if Garmin made it update so you can just add to your custom POI's instead of reloading all of them every time you want to add new ones.

Again thank you,

No problem. FYI - all of that info (about loading POIs) is in the FAQ on this site. smile

I kind of like the way Garmin does it. Just maintain 2 folders on your computer. One folder for ALL POI files that you have, and one for only the POIs you want to have on your device. That way, you can swap them in and out without worrying about which ones you need to delete from the Garmin.

You also have the option in

You also have the option in the manual mode to just ignore the file that you don't want to make changes to.I do that sometimes because after setting alerts by distance I don't want to have to re-set them again.

Initial download of POI's

Can anyone list the step by step sequence to download POI's for by Nuvi 350?

Ignore vs Next

I learned that if you press ignore in the manual mode you do not load that file. If you press "next" at the bottom you do load the file without manual alerts.

Multiple POI's

Try creating sub-directories under the POI folder -

Then put individual POI files in their own folder and give them descriptive names. When you download a new POI, it will create a file named POI - Rename it to a descriptive name and put it in a descriptive sub-folder. The Nuvi will then read all the POI's and will not overwrite any, becaue there are no files named POI to overwrite. Plus, all your POI's are segregated into their own directories.

This works fine on a 750.

Hope this helps.

Download of POI'S
