Nuvi 660 Questions

Hello all. I am a new registered user to POI Factory. I am also a owner of a new Nuvi 660 (thanks to Best Buy and their Black Friday deal).

Couple of questions, I have searched and came up empty so far.

First, how long does it take to fully charge the Nuvi 660?

Second, what is the largest SD memory card I can use?

I have been playing around with the 660 and I like it. I was surprised it came with the updated 2008 maps.

Thanks,

Bill

search on 660 and sd card

A 2gb works well. No need to buy an expensive one. Just plain Jane basic SD card is your best bet. If you drive around with the 660 plugged into vehicle pwr it'll charge in no time. On the computer...I can't say.

Nuvi 660

I have tested 2GB card so far without any issue on Nuvi 660.
On my computer it took me an hour and half from zero to full charge.

My nuvi from Bestbuy also came with 2008 maps. I called Garmin and requested mapsource to manage extras on my pc.

Would the Mapsource Trip and Waypoint Manager be the samething? I have this software that I used with GPSmap 60CSx.

New Question

I too just received my Nuvi 660 from the Black Friday sale at Best Buy.
It came with Fodor's Garmin Travel Guide North America SD Card. Is this normal, or did I get a bonus?
I love the 660 after having the 360 for a few months. I love the larger screen.
I didn't realize it had the FM unit built in. I got more than I expected!

Thanks

Just wanted to say thanks for all the responses. I now know what all my options are.

And yes The North America Travel guide is now included with the 660, I am not sure what other models it is included or at all.

You got extra in the bundle.

Circuit City also has that bonus. Not that it means much, unless your a tourist. You paid $129 for the FM unit.

Not Really

Fact/

I don't look at it that way, since I only paid $399 for the unit, instead of $600 to $800 at other stores.

I paid about $650.00 in August. And $479 for the 680 a couple of days ago.
My 660 stopped working, and I sent it back to Garmin and they sent me back a new one without the Fodors. I had to ask for it and they sent me the card.
You are right, if it was included I would take it.

I received the Garmin Travel Guide but I can't figure out you load it on to the 660. I mean, I can put it in the storage slot on the unit but then I don't have anywhere to put my other storage card with my music, pictures, maps, etc. So how do you load it on to the unit itself without having to place in in the card slot?

Stick it in the slot

I got the same BBuy deal on the 660 with the Fodor Travel Guide included. Wonder if you "reboot-restart" everything it would then install for you. As Rick said above it should install right from the card...mine did.

As I understand it only the unit it came with "free" will recognize it for load. So if you got it with the 660, as I did, it won't also work on your 680. Perhaps someone else has other ideas??

Careful of High Capacity SD cards.

I fought for two days with a couple of new SanDisk 4GB and 8GB SDHC cards. I think any Micro SD card with a capacity larger than 2GB will probably be an SDHC. The cards worked fine in my 680, but would not work in my computers. The SanDisk tech support line was very unhelpful.

Reading between the lines, the 4GB and 8GB cards are High Capacity and seem to require a later model USB card reader that is SDHC compatible. They are probably incompatible with older devices (cell phones, gps, cameras) that are not SDHC rated. So, if you want to move the cards back and forth, make sure you have a compatible reader. The SanDisk tech support line was very unhelpful.

And, buy the cards where you can return them if you have a problem.

Female too quiet?

LOL----You have got to be joking. I've been looking for a woman like that all my life.

SDHC

I have the 8GB Kingston card in the 650 and it is recognized by the unit.
You will need to buy a new reader as the old ones are not compatible with the new SDHC cards. If you don't want to spend the bucks till the price comes down, use the nuvi as a reader.

Thanks

Looking in sundays adds Best Buy had 4gb Sandisk SD cards on sale. Plus I had a reward zone $20 certificate to use so I picked one up for $14.99.

Now I am in the process of learning how to load Custom POI's from the site onto my 660. Mainly the Redlight Cameras and the Icon. Trying both ways of loading to SD card as well as usb cable.

And to comment about the Travel Kit. Yes I recieved an SD card with my 660.

Does the GPS recognize the 4GB card?

gerrydrake wrote:

Just receive my Nuvi 660. Want to transfer my music to the spare 4GB I have. Will the GPS recognize it automatically and prompt to play the music from the 4GB SD card?.

I don't want to store the music on the GPS as its memory is very limited. Don't know how much? Does anyone know how much memory a 660 has?

Music anyone?

I believe the 660 has 2gb, but about 1.5 is used up by the unit itself. I have 530,000 custom POI's loaded and still have 440mb left. The 660 will play the music in alphabetical order. If you want it different, you will have to create a playlist using a different program (Windows media player for one) and load it on the 660.

One more Black Friday Best Buy Newbie

I also bought one from Best Buy, If you hook up your Nuvi to the computer highlight the drive and right click on it. I will show your memory, how much is used and whats left. This is done in a pie graph. I have my music on a 2Gig card and it will play off of that. Don't know about the 4 Gig for sure.

Use Cassette Adapter if you have a cassette player

I wanted to play mp3 in my nuvi 660. My car has antenna in the back, so i was not able to get clear voice through my car speaker. I purchased Cassette Adapter and connected it to headphone jack in 660.

Now I listen mp3, traffic direction through my car's speaker. It is great. No issue of low voice or any thing.

I connected my phone to nuvi and nuvi to speaker. So i receive phone call through car's speaker. I am loving this nuvi.

Fodor Travel Guide installed without any issue

As soon as I inserted SD card with Fodor Travel Guide, nuvi asked me to install. I installed it and removed the SD card. I have whole Fodor Travel Guide in my nuvi under Extras.

I put another 2GB SD card full of mp3 songs.

Any luck?

My nuvi from Bestbuy also came with 2008 maps. I called Garmin and requested mapsource to manage extras on my pc.

Did you have any luck with your request for mapsource for your PC?

Surprised !!

I am surprised. I have called Garmin Support almost 2 weeks back and representative told me he will ship CD immediately. After 3 weeks, no CD in mail. so I am going to call them back and see if their system shows any activity for my account.
I will post back my experience.

Thanks.

Works on both

They way I loaded on the 680. Turn the unit off out of the car, insert the card and boot up. It will recognize a card and ask to install. Install it, and then look under where to/extras and it is there.

Hi rkares10,

What I do, is insert the SD card into my Nüvi 670 and then mount the unit. The icon for the Garmin "and" the SD card appear on my desktop. Then I double-click the SD card to open it and drag-n-drop my selected .mp3 files, onto the card. I put each artist in their own folder (no nested folders). I also have a mixed artist folder with my favorites in that folder. Just remember, you can't have any folders, inside a folder (nested folders).

HTH (hope that helps)

Regards.

So, what do you see when you hit Browse on the GPS player and choose ALL? Do you not see the files? Can you see the files if you look at the SD card when the GPS is plugged into the computer? iTunes seems to do a good job of converting stuff to mp3's that work well with my 660. If you can see your current files with the computer, but the GPS either can't see them or can't play them, I'd try taking one song and converting via iTunes; drag it to the appropriate folder and see if it works. If it does work, dump the WMA-mp3 converter you used previously.

There's two volume settings, make sure each one is cranked all the way up.

Wont find or play WMA

The only thing is mp3, it wont play wma files, so convert them to mp3 and all should be ok.
