map of the philippines for garmin

I recently visited the philippines and used a map that I got from the internet. I was glad that I downloaded it to my sd card because it had a lot of POI's and it did get me home everytime I got lost. I used a garmin c330. I surprised my brother who lives there but did not know the map exists. I loaded it to his Garmin quest without any problems. It was not totally accurate because there was a main road that were not there (C5) and if you made a wrong turn, it won't recalculate till you have gone about 100 meters off course. However, I should not even complain because it was free, and I certainly appreciate all the voluntary work done by this group of filipinos. Map only works for garmin units.

Success! but...

Finally, I was able to download the map by using my other PC. It really was the Avast... Anyway, I followed the instructions posted above, and the map is definitely on my nuvi. Now I have another problem, the satellite can't seem to locate me? It was working fine when we were using it in the US. In Map Info settings should both Philippines and US be checked? or should I uncheck US? I tried both but the satellite can't find me, or is it the other way around? smile Sorry for my silly questions, so new at this...

The maps shouldn't affect the satellite reception..

The maps can both be checked. I have read of others having problems with satellite reception. Just make sure you are not in simulator mode... Take the unit outside with no obstructions to the sky and wait at least 20 minutes.... If that doesn't work try resetting the unit...

How to reset the unit can be found in the appendix page 9:

Could it be a false positive by Avast? I just tried downloading from my other PC (which uses Trend Micro PC Cillin antivirus) and there was no problem. But when I copied the file onto my laptop, again the Avast went off! I think I'm gonna have to download Mapsource onto my other PC. Bummer...

Never had a problem with my Symantec Corporate Edition ver 10.0.2.2001 antivirus program.

installed this on my c550.

installed this on my c550. hope it helps when i visit next month! thanks.

Don't use it if you have the latest version of MapSource V6.141

If you are using V6.137 then just click on the file you downloaded jklinc_5.00beta.exe. You do have to have mapsource installed... You can then load the maps to your gps with mapsource... Once you have installed it you will not be able to use MapSource v6.141, it will not run with that map set installed, and it is rather tricky to uninstall the mapset.

nevermind the mapsource

nevermind the maprsource i was able to upload the map using this http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mdipol/img2gps/ but im not sure if this will work i hope it has voice also

voice

i tried simulating a route and in noticed that it does not say the name of the street unlike the one i saw in youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFMceADbk_4

is there something wrong with the way i install it or this software is different from the one in youtube

.

Does your GPS unit have TTS (text-to-speech) voices?

If it doesn't, you will not get the street names announced.

tts

its a garmin c330 and i found out that it is not capable of pronouncing street names hehe better upgrade to a higher model

you used a magellan? well..

you used a magellan? well.. then i wont be surprised if you dont make it home!!!

Mapsource 6.14.1 Broken by jklinc_5.00beta.exe

I just ran into this thread and wondered how this map compares with the one posted on cgpsmapper, so I dowloaded jklinc_5.00beta.exe and ran it. It broke Mapsource 6.14.1 (bulag, I didn't read the post "Don't use it...")- running Mapsource popped up an alert about a bad map install, and would not continue to run. To get rid of it, I had to remove the PhilRout key (and subkeys) in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\Mapsource\Families

If anyone is interested, the Phillippine routable map successfully installed is available at:

http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/maplist.php?country=164

I used the installer (.exe) for map ID 63028373 "Philippine Routable" and it integrated into Mapsource 6.14.1 with no problem.

As for the accuracy of the map, I'm not sure (not in the Philippines now), but I've tried routing between familar places on my Nuvi 350 and the routes taken seem reasonable.

Thanks for the warning

Downgraded to MapSource 6.13.7 to load PhilRout

I was so desperate to see how the jklinc_5 Philippine map compared with the old version I had from cgpsmapper, that I loaded an older version of MapSource from a map update DVD I had from last year. I used my 2nd PC that didn't have MapSource on it. jklinc_5.00beta.exe integrated without problems, and I was able to use MapSource to send the map to an SD card for my Nuvi.

This is a great map! Lots of built-in POIs, and they are actually searchable. So are the street names (but no street numbers). I suppose Manila isn't as bad as Tokyo that has non-sequential house numbering, but I can imagine the data capture effort would be tremendous.

Thanks to all the contributors of this map project!

I also could not correctly

I also could not correctly install the latest version of Mapsource because of the 'philrout' error message. Rather than doing a 'restore' on my computer, I just went into 'regedit' and removed all traces of 'klinc' (the Philippine map download) and was then able to open the new version of mapsource.

new version = mapsource compatible

the latest version 5.08 is compatible with the latest mapsource version.
whether you should upgrade mapsource is a different subject, personally, i really don't like it.

C330

I was looking for electronic maps when I came across this forum. I have a c330 and would like to try downloading the same map as you have. I tried the website you recommended, but I guess I am not much of an internet savy; could not find the correct one. I am due to visit the homeland by Jan. 2009. Will appreciate the help. Thanks.

I'm not a C330 user, but the following generic procedure should work.

Assuming you have a Windows XP PC, and you have not installed Mapsource on your PC, here are the steps. If you are a novice you might want to ask someone who's used to downloading and installing programs to help you. You must have a USB cable to connect your GPSr to the PC. Some of the files below are large, so you better have a broadband connection. I

Step 1. Download and install Garmin Training Center on your PC.
Here is the Link:
http://www8.garmin.com/software/TrainingCenterForWindows_343...
It should also install the Garmin USB Driver.

Step 2. Download and install the Garmin Mapsource Update.
http://www8.garmin.com/software/MapSource_6141.exe

Step 3. Download and install the Philippine map:
http://konkursbeschleuniger.de.p11.hostingprod.com/phroadgui...

Step 4. Connect your C330 to the PC using a USB cable. If you see a "New Device Found" message, just have windows automatically install the device. The drivers should already have been installed previously.

Step 5. Launch Mapsource
Start->All Programs->Garmin->Mapsource

Step 6. Use Mapsource to load the map into your GPSr
a. Select the Philippine Routable 5.17 map in the pulldown at the upper left hand corner of Mapsource
b. Select the entire Philippine map using the "Map Tool" (The entire map should tun from light blue to a darker blue, and on the Maps tab on the left you should see Maps(34)).
c. Use Transfer->Send to Device to send the map to your GPSr.

When done, you should have the new map on your GPSr.

Good luck.

C330

Thanks a lot. Will try your process and see by simulation if I got something right. "Old dogs sometimes are hard to train".

C330: Downloading Phil. Map

Thanks for your detailed guidance Akapaun; I successfully downloaded the Map to my SD card and made it work on my C330.

You guys are wonderful. Hoping to get the usual courtesy in the near future.

normal price between 20 to 50 peso an hour in the provinces. in MM, it really depends where and how fast they are. HTH

Phroadguide

that's about 50 cents to 1 dollar (US) converted. It's the same price in Metro Manila.

Congrats to http://www.freewebs.com/phroadguide/

I just got myself a Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx and loaded the map from phroadguide. Me and wifey tested it over the weekend and went from qc to makati to tagaytay via slex and back to manila via silang road to qc again ang back to makati and it was awesome. The navigation was all accurate. It even prompted me to turn right from santolan and make a u-turn to edsa to head for makati. that was really cool.

the map is really great. hope i also get to contribute to this effort of building the map ang make it freely available.

awesome work you guys in phroadguide.

that's good news

Since I used the older version a year ago, it seems that the map is more accurate. The older version did not even have C5 listed.

POI for philippines

Guys, try this site http://waypoints.ph/wptlist.php. They added downloadable GPX for know places in the philippines.

Currently it only work on beaches category. They are still working with it. Try to check the website anytime when it is completely implemented.

Can anyone load a philippine map (or metro manila map only) to my Garmin Nuvi 310? I am willing to pay a fee. Thanks.

I have a garmin 350 and I was able to download the map from http://www.freewebs.com/phroadguide/

I assume it will work on your unit because the map is garmin compatibale.

Go to download, and download the version 5.08. And run the exe program.

Do you have mapsource? This is needed to upload the maps to your unit.

no need to pay

No need to pay anyone, this is as simple as it gets.

Go to http://www.freewebs.com/phroadguide/download.htm
click the "Download gmapsupp.img here." link.

download the file.
run the file.
a gmapsupp.img will be extracted.
copy that file.
connect nuvi to pc, browse to the garmin folder
paste the gmapsupp.img file in the garmin folder.

Done.

good luck,

philippines gpsmap-routable

Went this past Sept '08 with the jklinc map, and it was awesome. It was on my SD Card and I just had to load up the map from my unit. When I arrived, I set things up on the device, and then it located itself after some time, since I traveled several hundreds of miles from where I usually am. I would say it took like 4-5 minutes. When it did find itself, I was going up EDSA by a Robinson Shopping Mall, and it showed up as a POI. There was other POIs that it showed (food, gas, etc) and would had to say that the POIs were pretty damn good. As I past buildings or interest, it showed a good number of them. I stayed in and around Makati, GreenHills, Tondo, Baliuag, San Miguel, and Cavite. I went to 4 SM Malls, 2 Robinsons, 3 Banks, Divisoria, and Campanies. Obviously, the major towns POIs worked great. The roads and traffic directions were right. When it came to towns like Baliuag, San Miguel, and Cavite, the inner roads or the smalls roads didn't show up. That is understandable, but the major roads to the towns were great and got me to those towns. I just asked around to reach a home afterwards. You know how it is. The 8-waves in Baliuag showed up as a POI. That was great. So for the most part, the Major Malls, Hotels, Food Areas showed up and I used this Map for pretty much everything. Priceless. There was a time that the device was acting weird. One time the vehicle and map was showing but the vehicle wasn't calibrated on the road it was on, but eventually as it stayed on it calibrated for the vehicle to be back on the road, maybe 4-5 mins. As a routable maps, while driving, it was accurate to the meters!!! So all in all, it's a great map. I didn't use the latest version of the map. I had a copy from when I initially join this group like from the beginning of this year i would say is my version.

Thanks to you...

Use of Map Source

This is a terrific thread. I have a Nuvi 350 & interested in learning to add some additional maps for Mexico or the south of France.

Do these exist for free as is the one for the Phillipines? If so, where?

I successfully loaded Mapsource but have not tested it to add maps to the 16 BG SDHC card on my Nuvi.

Thanks.

Open Street Maps provides free maps, and several sites do weekly or daily snapshots of the data and provide free conversion to Garmin format. Some of them I've tried are:

http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php
(all regions of the world)
and
http://esambale.wikispaces.com/osmphil_garmin
(Philippines)

If you want accurate maps of Europe, you might as well purchase the SD card from Garmin.

As far as Manila goes, I've noticed the road contours of the OSM map are nicer than the http://roadguide.ph/ non-contributor map, but the road names and labeling are not as accurate.

Just track back to this thread, maybe someone will post more useful links (only legal maps please.)

.

sweetness. i will try that. ill let you guys know what i think. thing is in the philippines, roads are changing all the time.and some paths arent even real roads (many in the provinces). this will have to be one of the most 'use at ur own risk' type of maps. plus, i wish there was a way to rate a road.. if we should use it or not (like a recommend). because there are places home where i'd like to keep my money, my head, my loved ones.
