I have a new garmin, and have uploaded some of the poi's
now how do i see the data fom these poi's on the gps unit?

Not sure what unit you have
Not sure what unit you have but try going to where to then my locations and you should see custom pois they should be there if the upload was sat.You should have got message that upload was sat using Garmin POI Loader.

Then yes, it does matter. Most if not all POIs both custom and pre-loaded will appear on the maps at around 500ft zoom level. You'll see more of them the closer you zoom in.
