Nuvi 660: spontaneous factory reset?

Been a relatively happy owner of a Nuvi 660, minus a few significant incidents.

Nuvi once suggested that the fastest, shortest route to a destination was a long abandoned mountain road in the middle of nowhere, causing me to almost be stranded in the middle of the wilderness instead of taking a fast, commonly used freeway that would have been just a few extra miles.

About two months ago the speaker and/or the amplifier went south, resulting in spontaneous sound issues. The unit was returned to the factory and despite a report that said that the unit was within factory spec, I was issued a new unit with a different serial number.

And most recently...

I loaned my Garmin to my mom who barely speaks any English so she could get to an unfamiliar destination. I told her to get back "home" she just needed to select "where to" and then "go home." Simple enough.

When I got my Garmin back that night, I immediately noticed that "home" was no longer there. Indeed, every single location I had programmed into the device was now long gone, including all personal settings.

Naturally I immediately wondered if she had inadvertently hit some key combo resulting in a complete wipe, so I had her repeat the steps she went through. Those steps she performed consisted of "where to" and then "go home." at which point she saw the strange unfamiliar message and she stopped using it.

She never removed the mounting cup stuck to the back of the unit, and where the Garmin was located there was no chance of something "accidently" hitting the "reset" button on the back. The unit was never removed from her car.

Yet somehow I've lost my dozen upon dozens of programmed locations and all personal settings.

Has anybody else experienced this issue before? It was running v4.20 of the firmware. I just upgraded it to v4.30 today.

Is it possible that exposing the unit to excess sunlight can reset it? Seems silly but I am at a complete loss to explain how this could have happened. Spontaneous factory reset is almost akin to seeing Santa Claus playing hopscotch with a Martian, but this is just weird. And frankly more than a little anger inducing.

Nuvi 350

I don't know about the 660 but my 350 started going berzerk all of a sudden. Things kept getting worse until the thing just went one day. I was sent a new one by Garmin. Of course I never found out what was wrong with the unit, but I was told by Garmin to pay close attention to the maximum and minimum temperatures that the unit can withstand and that they can quickly be exceeded in a parked and locked car. I now carry mine in my pocket and never leave it in the car.

Nuvi 660: spontaneous factory reset?

I had the same speaker problems and I also received a new (refurb) unit and all of my favorite sites were not present, in fact, my HOME button was to somewhere in CA and I live in MI.....

garmin 660 firmware

You mention you are running v4.30 firmware on your 660. Garmins website still shows only 4.20 as the most recent. Where did you download it?
