E-mail alerts

I have subscribed, on Garmin's website, to receive an e-mailed notification when the software is updated.
So far, there have already been s/w updates for my 350 & 660 - never got any alert!
And no, it's not about firewalls, spam filters, etc; always Garmin's (other) e-mails got through...
So, what's the catch?

Get Garmin or Get Lost

I did...

I received an e-mail from cartography@garmin.com on 19 October to let me know that the City Navigator Middle East v4 Update was available.

First e-mail from them since registering with them in March '07 though...

I got one...finally...sort of

I received an e-mail a few weeks ago letting me know that v2008 maps were available....LoL I had to recheck the date of the e-mail, it was Nov 2007. Only a few months behind.

However,

I've never received an e-mail letting me know of a software update. Still waiting for that to happen. Maybe they have a 13 month lag time.

Same here. Received an email from Garmin re: v2008 update a couple of weeks ago being available for $69.95.

I just read the discussion forums here for any updates smile

Just my guess...

This is just my guess, but I think Garmin’s goal is to make sure your overall experience with them is a good one. But if everyone hits their system as soon as an update becomes available, they could possibly have capacity issues and frustrated customers unable to get to the update. Unless the update is something critical (which I've not observed any of them to be), does it really matter if everyone finds out in a month as opposed to a day?

There are always those closely involved with the subject that has ways of finding out about updates (for example, subscribing to POI-Factory!!!) and they get on the updates right away. For those who are casual users (or just oblivious to such matters), an eventual email is just the ticket - and it doesn't cause Garmin as much heartburn.

The reason I think this could be their philosophy is because of my own experience a couple of years ago. I own a GPSmap 60CS and I learned of an update that I never got around to installing (I don't even remember exactly how learned of it). Some weeks later, I received an email from Garmin about the update and was a bit chagrined that it took so long to be notified. Some months later I learned about another update and immediately went to download it... but I couldn't access the website. I remember thinking that that could be the reason I didn’t get the immediate notification the first time; they needed to spread it out.

Like I said, this is just my guess, but I am a real fan of Garmin and it seems like something they would think about to avoid unhappy customers.

I got my nuvi 660 1 year ago and I subscribed to receive the email updates/alerts as well right after I received it. I never received any emails from Garmin till about 5 or 6 months ago asking me to confirm my email subscription with them. I acknowledged it and STILL haven't received any info from Garmin. I don't know what gives!

I started out getting update emails for my Street Pilot 2720. Never got anything regarding my Nuvi 660, just the 2008 map update email. Now, I don't get any email alerts at all. I just stay informed and read the forums. smile
