Q. I have connected my USB GPS unit to the PC but the USB GPS device does not show up in the "Save To" or "Send To" dialog boxes within MapSource. What is wrong?
A. In order for MapSource to properly detect your USB GPS unit, make sure that your current version of MapSource is 5.4 or greater. To check your version, open MapSource and click on HELP. Then select ABOUT MAPSOURCE to display the program version number.

You may download the most current version of MapSource by following this link: http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

If the unit is still not detected by MapSource, try the following:
1. Go to the Device Manager. In Windows 98SE and ME, click on START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL. Then double-click on SYSTEM, then DEVICE MANAGER. For Windows XP and Windows 2000, (XP) Click START/CONTROL PANEL (2000) START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL. Then double-click on SYSTEM, then HARDWARE, then DEVICE MANAGER.

2. Once in Device Manager, do you see any yellow Question Marks or Explanation Points or Red X?s?

3. You may see a USB Device under OTHER DEVICES. If you do, double-click on the USB DEVICE heading. This will bring up a properties window. Click on the Drivers Tab, then click in the UPDATE or REINSTALL DRIVER Button.

4. Insert your Disk 1 or Setup CD (or your MapSource Product or the Trip and Waypoint Manager CD if your unit came with this CD) into your CD-ROM drive.

5. The Hardware Wizard will come up. Click NEXT. Using the default settings, click NEXT again and then uncheck EVERYTHING EXCEPT CD-ROM DRIVES. Click NEXT. When using Windows 98 or ME, you may be prompted that the file GRMNGEN.SYS cannot be found. If so, click on the BROWSE button. Under DRIVES, click the down arrow and choose your CD-Rom drive Letter. Click OK, and then click OK again.

6. You should now be prompted that the drivers have been copied. Click FINISH.

7. The Hardware Wizard may come up one more time. Follow the steps above again and this will install GRMNUSB.SYS. Again, you may be prompted that the file GRMNUSB.SYS cannot be found. If so, on Windows 98 and Me, click on the BROWSE button. Under DRIVES, click the down arrow and choose your CD-Rom drive Letter. Click OK, then click OK again.

8. Once the Hardware Wizard has completed, click CLOSE or OK on the properties window. The USB Device should now be gone.

9. You can verify the USB GPS is installed by clicking the PLUS by GARMIN DEVICES or Universal Serial Bus Controllers. You should see a heading for USB GPS.

At this point, the USB GPS should now appear and function within MapSource for you.
