Help for the External Power

I'm new to the GPS world. Kinda like an analog man in a Digital World.

I purchased a new Nuvi 670, for our Europe Walking Tour. The best operating time I could get out of this GPS was about 1 hr. After changing the settings to 30% illunimation and 15 second time out I was able to gain an assitional 38 minutes. If I were using this thing in the car it'd be fine. However since I'm not I had to find an alternate power source. Since this thing goes into Sync Mode whenever it's plugged into anything other then the car mounting adaptor, and WILL NOT allow you to operate while using either the car power adaptor (without the mount) or the computer charging adaptor. I was forced to seek another source of power.

After contacting Garmin, they tell me that's it's designed to work this way....? Asking for assistance, regarding the battery, i was informed it's only accessable by sending it back to Garmin, I suggested they make it like a Digital Camera Battery or cell phone battery, replacable. Then you could market another useful product. Reply from Garmin, "will consider that information."

SOOO my journey began. I purchased an external battery 8000 mah, fortuniatly I had a friend that deals with power cords, make me an adaptor cord that would plug into the battery (on one end), the charging board (in the middle) and a mini usb plug (on the other end).It also charges my Blackberry and my digital camera batteries.

Well we've returned from visiting France, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. The external battery worked GREAT, it gave me between 36-48 hours of operation without a charge. I carried everything in a small fanny pac, no problems.

So If your having the same difficulties, dont settle for excuses!

Pretty creative!

Good job. I'd be interested in seeing some plans for such a device. But since I also have a GPSmap 60, I probably wouldn't need it - I just like to tinker.

Neat Device

This sounds like something your friend might want to think about marketing.

Yeah, that does sound like a

Yeah, that does sound like a neat idea that you came up with.

By the way, if you eject the nuvi (in windows) it will charge and still be usable.

My nuvi only last 4-5 hrs, sometimes less. I am not sure where they are getting the battery life specs. I am sure that they are running them at 10% light mode, not in route mode, and no sounds...lol. There is no way for me to get 8 useful hrs out of my nuvi as advertised.

In car alternative power

My boss took his MIO 220 which is recharged by a mini-usb and wired it directly into his overhead (near the windshield) dome light by splicing a cable much in the same way.
Sometimes you need to think a little different. Good job.

External Battery

No kidding, that is definitely a marketable item. Tell your buddy to mass produce.

Spare battery?

I'd buy one...

I too thought about how to power my gamin 360 if for some reason no external power source was available. Check out Gomadic.com. They have an aux battery pack that uses 4 AA batteries, there are addaptors for garmin and other items like cell phones etc.

Never drove over here, huh? I have seen people shave, eat, apply make up, read the paper, and that was before she cut me off. LoL I ride a motorcycle whenever possible, and the things you can see. On a bike there is little else you can do but ride and watch your surroundings. And to tell the truth, it can scare the bejeebers out of you. To be fair to cagers - those who drive - I have seen bikers chat on the cell phone and ride.

Naval Aviation

Navair, what are you flying? I was a SH-60B Seahawk LAMPS pilot back in my day. Went through VT-27 in Corpus for fixed wing and HT-8 for rotary wing. Instructed in HT-8 as well. Good times.

There are many types of external power sources for Cameras, GPS and other things. I also have the 4 "AA" battery with the usb output. It work quite well with 4 of the energizer lithiums in it. There are many different type out there. APC makes a few nice ones.
