Couple days ago I've read that Tele Atlas NV, the world's second-largest maker of maps for car navigation devices, has been steadily loosing money for the last 10 (yes, ten!) years... how is this possible?
If, by any chance, they're not up to par w/market's demands, why the bidding war?

Garmin sleeping like a baby

I bet Garmin is now sleeping like a baby...Every 2 hours they wake up and cry!

$$$

I think that if they own the mapping company, no royalties will have to be paid to use the maps.

Why ... ?

It'll probably never happen, but why couldn't Tom-Tom and Garmin get together and jointly make the purchase instead of bidding against each other.

And why doesn't Apple and

And why doesn't Apple and Microsoft just get together and build one OS? It's just not going to happen.

Too bad

the Tele Atlas maps won't work in our Garmins. The Tele Atlas map has my street shown on it that I have been trying to get NavTeq to add for the past 3 years. Maybe that is why Tele Atlas is losing money, there keeping the maps up to date.

Not comparable ...

This scenario would be similar to Tom-Tom and Garmin getting together and building one GPS OS, not close to what I questioned. Had you mentioned 'Why doesn't Apple and Microsoft get together and buy (not build) ZoneAlarm for joint firewall use', that would be comparable.

Not exactly a scientific opinion, but...

I've seen Tele Atlas vans, even had breakfast with one of the drivers who gave me a brochure on their technology. Their vans are outfitted with cameras, so they'll be prepared for the next leap. I've never seen a Nav Tek vehicle working to keep maps updated though. You're statement may have been more accurate than you think.

... then why the NavTeq maps are considered to be better than TeleAtlas'?...

Just A Comment.........

What is the basis of you thinkink NavTeq are any better? TT is selling a lot of GPSs'. I think they are both good, but Tele Atlas just seems to be more up to date for the reason I stated in my above post. I have contacted NavTeq more that 6 times in the past year, and to date, I have not received an acknowledgment from them receiving my emails. This is not to say Tele Atlas would respond, but their maps are more up to date for my purpose.

Have you sent e-mails, or used their MapReporter
http://mapreporter.navteq.com/dur-web-external/secured/submi... ??

Ones submitted by map reporter are given unique tracking numbers, and if you create a personal account, you can add submissions to a personal tracking page - and you can monitor the status of submissions you've made to Naveteq.

I did a lot of research before jumping in and getting my first GPSr...the Nuvi 350...and did so after learning that Naveteq was better overall at providing North American data than TeleAtlas based on user reviews of several sites comparing GPSr models and features. Sure, TeleAtlas may have one thing you've specifically noticed in your area that is more updated...they are known for better European data than Navteq....and if I was going to Europe, I'd probably get a unit that had TeleAtlas maps...

Obviously, the widespread popular wisdom is making me think that NT is better than TA; I haven't made a specific comparaison by myself but I've read about in too many places not to believe it.
Anyway, the general perception is "use NT in USA but TA in Europe" and somehow, I don't think this is related to customer service performance...

Yeah, but they'll still stick it to us and make us continue to pay for map updates...
