Field Lattitude and Longitude

This site is great! Thanks.

I am trying to find the lat and long of a place in the middle of a field that has no "known address".
How is this done?

Thanks

Where am I?

Hi, everyone,

One way to find coordinates in the "middle of a field" using my Nuvi 660 is to take Nuvi for a walk (handheld). When you get where you want to be, touch the signal strength indicator on the upper left of the screen. Your coordinates are displayed at the bottom left of the screen.

Good Luck, Miki

.

Or if you can locate it on Google Earth, you can get the coordinates from that.

Another way

With a Nuvi, hit 'Where to' >> 'Coordinates' -- You should see your present location's coordinates...then hit >> 'Next' >> 'Save' - and it will store to favorites.

MapSource will also give

MapSource will also give lat/long. In MapSource usually open my saved waypoints then save a new waypoint (in this field) then re-save the file. Next time you "send to device" in MapSource, you will get the new waypoints.

I would suggest

you do like Miki pointed out. Just take a walk with Nuvi. You can use Google Earth, but what happened to me, may happen to you. The coordinates it gave me was exactly 1 mile off course. It all depends on how close you want to be.

Garmin 660

You can also browse the map.

I am looking at Reno, NV I-80 exit 21 specifically.

How can I get the lat long of the middle of the bridge for that exit?

Other than the taking a walk suggestion (which is definitely appropriate in most situations), the rest of the suggestions given should work for you.

Ok firenuts

How'd you come up with it?

how true.. Take a Walk lol

I love the "Take a Walk" answer the best...rofl

Indeed, definitely appropriate in most situations!

I'll be snickering over that one for awhile

I thought about that also

But I came to the conclusion that some people have more time than I do... and can walk from Wisconsin to Nevada...

I just thought there was some way to find the lat and long using all this high flutin technology stuff.

I'm in NH

I used google earth.

Motorcycle Mama

I'm a thinking you have something I don't have.
I'm a thinking it might be Trip and Waypoint Manager from Garmin... is my thinking right?

smile

I use mapsource mostly

I use mapsource mostly and google earth to verify (visually) the location I'm looking for.

Yes, I have City Navigator installed in my MapSource. That's why I initially recommended Google Earth because everyone (for the most part) can get and use Google Earth. I used MapSource for the screenshot because it was quicker for me at the time.

You can use you GPS unit in the same manner. I browsed to Reno on my Zumo and was able to find that ramp there as well.

I Found it!

Hey guys, thanks.

After some struggle here with my Nuvi, I found out how to get the coordinates from Nuvi.
Here's what I did.

I used the map and scanned to exit 21 in Reno, NV and then hit the "set location". I think this sets the location to that point.

Then I went back to the menu and hit "Where to?"
Then scrolled down until I saw "coordinates" and pressed that and
Kiabongo presto... I got my lat and long for exit 21 on route 80 in Reno, NV.

I knew there was a way... I just had to go through the learning curve... which sometimes gets pretty long for me. smile

I still think GPSs and computers and such were made by women... just to give us guys more grief than we deserve.

Thanks all.
