Nuvi 360 - Phantom Custom POI in Libya

Good Afternoon All

Having a headscratcher with my Nuvi 360.

With increasing frequency, it is giving me a Custom POI Speed Warning located at N 22.88686 E 23.25162 which is just inside the Libya - Chad Border. Using mapper.Acme.com, it is about 15 miles east of a spot named Tullab. I am not an Image Analyst, but it sures appears to be rough country. Sand and Rock outcroppings. No road. Tullab looks like a happening spot. No buildings but the map show three local road joining into a larger road.

Considering I live in Ottawa Canada and I didn't put the Point in, it is a petty recurring annoyance, though an interesting lesson in world geography

First seen on a trip through NY State with a +25 million KpHr speed warning, it is now showing as a zero speed point.

Additionally, it triggers a Camera Icon on the left side of upper routing bar (green bar). The Icon is not discussed in the 360 manual.

I have used the standard reset several times, but it still comes back. All of my Custom Speed Points do not use the description I am seeing so I don't think I have a corrupted speed camera file.

To be on the safe side, I've trashed all my Custom GPI files created using Simon Slavin's MacGarmin tools and will be leaving them off the 360 for awhile.

I've saved my favourites so I think I will also use the Master Reset during boot-up to make the unit go brain dead.

Three questions:
Can anybody explain the camera icon?
Anybody else getting a point in Libya or somewhere else off the beaten path?
Another corrective suggestions beyond the Master Reset?

Cheers

Not the one in Illinois.

Issues I have seen/eliminated

Prior to loading custom poi's I view the files for errors. (a big source of issues!)

I load an SD card and copy the custom poi's to my units. I follow certain procedures to avoid phantom issues:

First I clear the poi's from the SD card (or the Nuvi - if loading directly) by opening the folder and deleting the file:

\Garmin\poi\poi.gpi

Then load the custom poi's, while observing error messages (I usually do a sanity check on the number of poi's and the file size).

Then when loading the units from the SD card, watch for messages. If there are any messages (such as zero speed, et al), open the folders on the unit, delete the custom poi file, then reinsert the SD card to load the file.

I am certain others will have helpful hints as well.

I recognise one tiny fragment...

That icon is from Garmin's own Safety Camera database (well it's one thing that uses the mechanism - there may be other things that do).

Are you sure there are no other .gpi files lurking on the unit? Nothing like CyclopsUK082906Sample.gpi
or safety_camera_xxxxxx.gpi ? Have a real good look (ie in unusual directories, hidden files etc) (and on the SD card of course. Maybe a Travel Guide?)

Not that you would have thought that Garmin have ever shipped a unit containing a speed camera database for Libya ...

Now if Simon's inadvertently created one of these style of .gpi files, he'll be fascinated to hear about it - the only official product that does, is Garmin GPI Creator Toolkit...

I checked the GPX versions of all my custom POI files though I do load the GPI files after running "gpx2gpi". No equivalent Latitude for the point in Libya found in the files using Texteditor.

I don't use an SD card. I just hook the Nuvi up to my IMac and drop the GPI files into the POI folder where they stay as individual files so I won't be able to check error msgs.

I will dump the POI.GPI file as you suggest.

Thanks for the feedback and tips.

Something else must be because I do NOT have the Garmin Safety Cameras selected in Proximity Points. I leave it to the Power Users like yourself to figure out why.

No SD card. I will poke looking for any other GPI files and Tour Guide stuff. Hope Finder Spotlight can do the trick.

I'll let you contact him. I've pestered him enough, though he is extremely patient and quick to reply.
