I would personally go for a C5xx series. The problem that I see with the C3xx series is that you can't see it on the computer. What I mean is, is that you can't see it in Windows explorer. This is a limitation that I personally don't like. Also the C5xx will allow you to store POIs on the SD card. It has better antenna, antiglare screen, and not too much more then a C340. I picked up my C530 for only $300.

Sorry to hear that but again it's a good reason to get something new. I've also decided to get the C340 for basically the same reason. Overstock.com has it for $259.99 and with a $30 off 250, you'll be able to get it for $229.99.

That's a good deal for a TTS

That's a good deal for a TTS unit.. I just got a C580 and I feel the streetpilot series give the most bang for the buck. The Nuvi's are very popular and not discounted much compared to the streetpilot line. My i3 is a great little unit too and now my wife has it.

I was looking also at a Nuvi

I was looking also at a Nuvi 250...wondering though if it has the newer screen for sunshine glare/ I looked at the C530 ...it has the anti glare newer screen...Do you think the Nuvi 250 has it over the 340/530 ? Size is kinda neat for portability.

On another point here. Cam

On another point here. Cam mentioned his car was broken into and they got his cell and Garmin. That reminded me of a local news broadcast how GPS's are hot (and I mean hot) items now for thieves. If they see even the ring left on your windshield they will assume you have a GPS or something worth taking, and break into the car. I have to use the disk, which I have mounted on the dash. I am about to remove it and get a pad that a friend of mine found that just sits on the dash and set my C550 on it. Not elegant, but I can remove both the C550 and the pad when leaving the car, ie. no evidence of something good in the vehicle.

Yes it has antiglare, but...

Yeah, it does, but it isn't as good as the C530 if it is anything like the nuvi 350

c5xx

I agree with asianfire. I really like my c530, particularly the screen and the sound. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, i.e. bluetooth, mp3, etc., but Cam99 already said that wasn't important. If you want TTS, the go for the c580.

I have the C340, I love it, but my sister bought a Nuvi 270 and now I'm a bit envious. I like the size, and some of the features.
Also I didn't realize until I read through these forums that the C340's sd slot could only be used with sd cards purchased from garmin. Nor did I know that Mapquest is loaded into the unit and as mentioned above, can't be seen on your PC.

I guess you have to decide what features are important to you and how much you are willing to spend.

Cam99 wrote:

I wasn't really saying that the 350 is bad. Just that the c530 has a better screen and sound.

The 350 is smaller, able to view/set locations by coordinates, see altitude, has a mp3 player, and able to set location. If you don't care about these things, I would get the c530 and modify it to have tts (warning, you can't do it on the most recent version of firmware).

Bingo! I am not sure if there is a GPS that has everything that I want. I would love to have the 350's features and size along with the screen and sound of the c5xx series.

Nuvi 660

I have had my 660 for 10 months and find something useful almost every trip. I recently purchased the 220W for my Father and he loves it as well. Garmin will not disappoint you.

I've been there before (stolen GPS)

I know exactly how you feel. I took it too much to heart when my GPS was stolen. I even started a new web site (which is far from being in full force yet) http://www.stolen-gps.com

I now strongly advise people to take the mount off the glass/dash. Though it's stupid, I now sometimes take my Garmin C550 with me. I can't believe that Garmin supplied me with "anti-theft" stickers with my GPS. Though no-one can use the GPS when stolen (since I use the PIN code), it's advertising that I have a GPS in the car.

Mine was stolen out of my wife's car in a parking garage durring the week day. Good news is that it was a cheap one and broken (kept shutting off by itself).

Good for you

When the sun was right, my c330 was catching reflections that bounced off the windshield, and from there off the dash. A 6" x 6" piece of black velvet on the dash in front of the c330 absorbed the reflection before it hit the screen.

GPS was stolen last night

My Garmin c550 was stolen last night. I was really upset this morning to see that it was missing. Unfortunately, I did not activate the anti-theft settings on it. Pretty dumb, huh? Is it worth contacting Garmin with the Serial number, since I did register it?

Use Garmin Lock and they just stole a brick

I use the Garmin Lock feature on mine. If it's stolen, it's as useful as a brick. Won't help me any, they will be gone before they figure out that it's useless. But at least I know that the thieves won't get any use out of it.

Yup and all the more reason

Yup and all the more reason to register it as soon as you get it with MyGarmin. Not only can the thief not get any use out of it, he may send it into Garmin with a sob story about forgetting his PIN/security location. Hopefully, at that point Garmin will compare the serial number with the registered user and realize that the person that sent it in is not one in the same. Then Garmin can contact the registered owner and see if it was legitimately sold. If not, return it to the registered owner.

And...do NOT set the security location as your home, place of work, or something else easily discovered. I have mine set at a strip mall parking lot on the way to work. And my home location is NOT where my house is actually located. Don't want to give the thief a front door invitation to my house. He'll already know that I have a nice car and GPS, so he may want to know what other goodies I have. Can't take that chance, especially owning firearms, too.

dash mounted pad

Where can I get the dash mounted pad that you speak off?? I am not anticipating the suction cup mount that came with my c340 to outlast my unit. Would like the portability of a pad too. Another question: How were going to charge the unit? The suction mount is the only way I know of to charge the unit unless you just lay the unit and mount on the pad. Like you say, not elegant, but functional.

I'd go ahead and contact Garmin. If it ever got sent in, hopefully they'd make the connection that the person who sent it in is NOT the registered owner and you could be contacted at that point to see if you sold it or it was truly stolen. It would be cool if Garmin revised it's updater so you had to enter your MyGarmin name and password to update anything, including adding map updates. You get three tries and it's still not right? Self destruct in 30 seconds, ala Mission Impossible. Or at least activate the Garmin Lock with a message saying it has to be returned for service.
