New Nuvi Series - Is there really much extra?

I did a product compare on the Garmin website between the Nuvi 670, 750, 760, 770 and cannot say that the new series seems to offer a heck of a lot more...

Also the specs for the Nuvi 750, 760, 770 seem damned near identical.

Or is it just me...?

The selling point for me on the 700 series vs. the 600, is the ability to do 10 routes on the 700's.

The 770 comes preloaded with transatlantic maps which the 760 and 750 don't have. The 760 has Bluetooth which the 750 doesn't have. I guess you would have to decide for yourself if Bluetooth is worth a extra $200.00 or not. The differences in the units are highlighted in pink when you compare the three.

I agree, but...

I agree Rugar, but I must admit that these 'new' features aren't exactly compelling enough to upgrade...

Probably not, But......

Probably not a reason to upgrade if you already have a 600 series as I see you do. I just got my first GPS unit, a c530 less then two weeks ago. I wasn't sure what I needed or wanted from one as I had never used one before, so I wasn't sure which unit to get. I found the 530 on sale, so I went with it to get my feet wet before spending a lot on money on something that I wasn't really sure that I needed to start with. Well now that I have it I'm hooked! I'm ready to upgrade already. If I'm going to go with the 600 series, it makes more since to get the 700 series because the price is showing the same. But I'm sure the 600 prices will be dropping a bunch. I will wait until after the first of the year to upgrade though to see what the users of the new units have to say, and what bugs have to be worked out on these new units.

New Nuvi Models

Quest 1: So the 700 series can now do routes...does anyone know if this is the only benefit of the new models?

Quest 2: When posters use the term "routes"...does this mean that you can put in a bunch of waypoints and let the GPSr figure out the most economical way to travel them? Or does routes mean a "breadcrumb trail". I seem to see posters use these terms interchangably.

Thanks in advance to any responses.

There may be more features

If you look at the images, which are small, you can see that on the 750 model, it has a mph box as well as the ETA and Turn in boxes.
We've all wanted to have the speed on the nav screen. Perhaps, there are more customizations.

Here's a link to a larger picture of the 750 to see what I'm talking about.

Routes

A "Stored" set of points that can be repeated without re-entering them again. Most often you create routes using Mapsource and uploading the routes to the GPS.

Example I travel from NE TN to Iowa, I do not want to go though Knoxville but travel though Cumberland Pass and other preferred points. Now when I get into the car, I just choose the route instead of entering the three or more point to execute the travel I preferred.

The "breadcrumb trail" will show where you have been. That is nice if you want to remember a location but did not save it as a POI. Also you can then upload the crumbs to Mapsource and save them. In this way I can compare two different ways that seem to take the same time and distance and compare what actually happened.

PS. No, the nüvi 680 does not have either, I once had the SP 2620 which the touch screen died. I miss these two features.

What does the speed box tell you?

I have a sneaky suspicion that the box that says 45MPH on the left hand side of the screen is not the speed you are traveling, but the speed limit on the road you are on. Anyone else think so too?

I think you may be right. The 700 series is supposed to display the speed limit on the road you are on.

Speed limits

I hope this can be updated regularly.

Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports rated the Nuvi 660 and 350 as top rated, but not consumer pics. Maybe the new Nuvis can top that.

y'all may be right

I just read something about Historical Average Speeds where TeleAtlas and NavTeq will both bundle map and traffic speed data.

NAVTEQ has made available its NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns, a database of typical traffic speeds on over 170,000 miles of primary and secondary roads across major U.S. cities, including interconnecting highways.

This new product delivers speeds for primary and secondary roads (function classes one through three) in major cities across the United States. Historical observations from GPS probe data are aggregated, verified, and then matched to TMC (Traffic Message Channel) codes on the NAVTEQ map.

I was really hoping for a speed indicator on the nav screen. Instead of having to flip to the trip screen. Oh well, maybe on the 8xx series!

Now that would be nice!!!!!! But I am sure that it would have to determine speed limit by the type of raod it is, and often limits can be different on the same type of road, but still, I would love to have that!

New Nuvi Series - Is There Really Much Extra?

After checking on the Garmin site more closely,
I have found out somethings I missed the first time about the new 700 series....

The Nuvi 750 does NOT include the following:
1. Leather Case
2. A/C Power cord.
3. FM traffic receiver/power cord or MSN
receiver/power cord.(Car Charger only)

The Nuvi 760 does NOT include the following:
1. Leather Case
2. A/C Power cord.
3. MSN Traffic receiver/power cord.
It does include FM traffic receiver/power
cord.

The Nuvi 770 does NOT include the following:
1. Leather Case
2. A/C Power cord.
3. MSN Traffic receiver/power cord.
It does include FM traffic receiver/power
cord.

Beside GPS prices falling, this may be another reason why the Nuvi 680 has about the same price as the Nuvi 750.
Garmin lists the FM receiver at $214.27
MSN receiver at $124.99
Leather Case at $18.00
A/C home charger at $25.00

If you do some web searching, I'm sure things can be purchased for less

I guess it is nice that you

I guess it is nice that you don't have to pay for stuff that you don't want. For me, I use my own case, don't care about the FM receiver, don't care aboutthe MSN, and I always charge via the in car charger or my usb port on the computer. I have yet to use the ac charger.

Thanks Rayzer

I had not noticed that it did not include a case or AC Adapter. While the adapter I can do without, I called Garmin and gave them an earful about not providing a case, seeing as how the unit is intended to be portable and the touch screen is fragile. I brought up the high theft rate forcing users to carry the units also. I suggested if they are trying to save cost then at least engineer a snap-on plactic cover to protect the screen. In the end they actually are sending me a leather case at no charge. Got to love a company that respects their existing customers and values the effect that word of mouth has on reputation.

Yeah, but the case doesn't

Yeah, but the case doesn't have a belt clip and that is why I don't use it. But if it works for you, awesome!

Nuvi 7XX Series

I'm pretty sure that the new series has a standard, or qwerty (sp) keyboard. That feature alone should help us "touch" typists. I too am disappointed that the unit will not come with a leather case (like my 350 did). I guess I'll have to call Garmin and raise kane about it to see if they will send me one.......

I wish that they would do an update to the 350 to have a qwerty keyboard, but then that wouldn't give me a reason to upgrade, now would it.
