Using Spell Name on Nuvi 660

I used Spell Name to find the CVS pharmacies in my area. I noted that the particular CVS that I usually use was not listed, even when I was parked in its parking lot, where I saved the location to Favorites. I then used Spell Name again, but the location I had saved still did not appear.

It seems that Spell Name does not include Favorites in its search, and that the only way to have a favorite location included in a Spell Name search would be to save it as a custom POI. But that defeats the convenience of saving a location to Favorites on the spot.

Does anyone know of an easy way to have Spell Name include the locations saved in Favorites when searching a name?

No, it will not do that.

But you can search by spelling the name in the Favorites themselves.

I'm not sure what steps you are taking when spelling the name, but CVS comes up on my Zumo if I go to Where to?> Food, Lodging> Shopping> All Shopping> Spell

It also comes up if I go to Where to?> Food, Lodging> Spell Name

If the location you are looking for is not in the database and you created your own Favorite based on the location, then there is no way to add it to the database for it to come up in a search other than searching the Favorites after you save it there.

That's not a bug...

It's a feature. That's how they programmed it. I don't know of a work-around, other than making a custom POI file as you discovered.

I use my 'Favorites' as a temp file - I'll download them into map source on occasion and create a custom POI file out of them, then clean them off my 660.

Please tell me how to

Please tell me how to download all of your Favorites at once and create a custom POI called Favorites.

CVS did come up at various locations, just not the one that is less than a mile from my house, which was strange.

Hook your nuvi up to your computer. Navigate to the GARMIN drive. Look for a file named current.gpx. Copy this file to your computer. This file contains your favorites. If you want it to be a Custom POI file named "Favorites", rename the file to Favorites.gpx and then load it with POI Loader.

I think this is what you are asking.

I use spell name all the time with FAVORITES?

I have a lot of way points so I have to spell the name to get to the end of the list. For example, I spell out "work" which is the name of my favorite for the office. After typing in a few letters, it comes up with three or four way points to choose from. Are you sure you are actually saving the favorite?

I did what you suggested,

I did what you suggested, and now Favorites is among my custom POIs. However, when I used Spell Name, none of the items listed in Favorites came up in a search. For example, my office is Work, but when I use Spell Name I only get various locations with the word "work", but not the location Work that I saved as a Favorite.

I am wondering if Spell Name searches only the POIs that Garmin provides, but not the custom POIs that a user downloads on their own and which are not included in the Garmin database.

You absolutely must search each data area separately.

A search of one area (built in POIs, Custom POIs, or Favorites) will NOT search the other areas.

I do the same exact thing!!!! Except for the map source thing, I open the gpx file in POIEdit and then copy paste into a POI I have.

It seems that Spell Name can search only built in POIs. To search custom POIs or Favorites is there any way to do it without manually scrolling through them?

Yes, you can search Favs or Custom POIs by ....

useing the "spell" feature once you have seleced "My Locations/Custom POIs" or "My Locations/Favorites". As MM said, you must search these data areas separately.

Thanks. I was so fixated on "Spell Name" that appears at the top of the screen to search built in POIs that I did not pay attention to "Spell", which appears at the bottom of the screen to search other POIs.
